Ram!!!

i am getting a new pc soon and i was wondering if 3gigs of ram would make a major difference on top of two gigs? I wont be getting vista for at least a year so would it make much of a difference now(on xp) or just get it later when i get vista?

if i do get 3gb i will be running 3x1gb sticks

Not really. I have vista and 3gigs and the performance increase was very minor after upgrading from 2gigs. only reason I got another gig was because it was for a cheap price.

besides, you'd only have 2 in dual channel unless you got 2x1gb and 2x512 (like me)

depends on what game you play. i still get a tiny bit of lag even with 2 gigs in project reality. the maps in there are humungous.

i probably being playing rtcw,bf2,etqw,cod4,wic & coh (nothing too intensive). Plus im sure i'll be getting other games when they come out if i like them.


also can a stock q6600 play cod4 on stock.

well you'll need to list other things like vid card and ram. no, a q6600 can't play cod4 stock (nor OCed) if you've got 1gb of ram and a 5200... see what I mean?

but the rig in my sig plays cod4 maxed everything, but no AA at native res and gets 40+FPS

ill be playing on an asus 512mb 3850 - how many watts would i need for this system? im probably going to get an antec sonata iii with a 500w earthwatts psu (included) but is a 430w enough? also, how long will it be before i have to upgrade the 3850?

i would not depend on a 430W psu Jubb i would (personal opinion) go with a 520W or 600 no higher dont think u need higher than i listed. (unless Crossfire is involved lol)

Don't get 3x1GB- get 2x 1GB and 2x512 as Tomeis said, as DDR2 works best when in pairs.

a single 3870 will work with a 380w dell psu, so he should be safe with 430w.

ati recommends 550w for crossfire, yet ive seen quad core/crossfire systems running on 450w so someone is letting the side down at ati,, plus these cards use 50% less power that the 2900's.

tbh i dont know why jubb jubb is asking that Q for a 430w psu when;

good quality psu's tend to out do themselves the corsair 520w being able to run 8800gtx sli for instance

Smaller linewidth (65nm instead of 90nm) because of manufacturing technology means less resistance thus less current (power) needed and heat dissipation making the chip cooler.

In the newer products there are more transistors etc. so the power demands are about even with newer and older generations now.

i was asking this because i havent fully decided yet if im going to go with the sonata III and might go with this case instead if 430w is enough

also ive used the psu calculator before and it said i needed 308 under i cant remeber if it was 85-90% load
