Help needed with older video card models.

My mom bought a new tft 19" wide screen for herself with native reso 1440x960 and the current display adapter (Matrox G400 dualhead) just can't output the native resolution making the text blurry.

So what is the cheapest AGP model that can display that resolution? Or any model because I'm buying it off most likely from net auction anyway. So it has to be nvidia or ATi for me to be able to download the drivers from the net.

nvidia site is not very helpful with this since 19" wide screen is quite recent phenomenom and the older products just boast their texture filling capabilities.

well buddy i am not a big help on AGPs but i can recommend two cards the nvidida one i am not sure off u may wanna pm alex98uk he's rly good ne wayz heres the cards i know

Nvidia: theres the 7600GT but thats midrange um maybe a 7900GS told ya i am not good with AGP cards i only owned one in my life the MX440 lol try alex though he's a good help here around these forumz!

nvidia 5200 or Ati 9800 should be more than enough, they're around 30euros and both will work in 4x mode,

do u want to play games on that computer? or is it just a work computer.

if its juts for work, 5200 shoul be fine and i wouldnt pay more than $30 for that. its not meant for gaming.

google agp card runs at 1x/2x/4x so yes its old, some of the newer 8x agp cards might not be compatible with lower slot speeds.

Thank you for the replies. It's just for my mom, so all it really needs is to have that 1440x960 resolution capability and AGP. No gaming or anything. I checked the mobo and it's some quite non-descript MSI board with 4x AGP. I remember something vague about those newer cards (8xAGP) not working properly with slower slots, so thanks for confirming that.

FX 5xxxx series can have 2048x.... resolutions, but it's still guess work if they really can show all the combinations.

Dual head was a big thing back then because it has two VGA outputs for dual monitor setup. Not a cheap card in it's heyday.

Maybe I'll send an email to nvidia and Ati about this after all.

Did you install the monitor driver?

Sure thing I installed the driver. The card was so retro that I had to dig up the driver from the driverguide which I use to scavenge drivers for ancient stuff also. Matrox provided drivers were of no help also.

When this dualhead model was current there were no 19" wide screen monitors around so the resolution is omitted from the selection.

Anyway. I phoned my bro because I remembered that he has also a 19" wide screen to find out his old gen display adapter. His card is MX4 so I think upward from there is a good place to start.

Wasn't referring to the driver for the video card, but the driver for the monitor itself. My 19" Acer is detected and works fine without the monitor driver with the exception of a couple of games. Without the driver if the game has WS support the resolution isn't listed in the games settings (1440x900), but once the monitor driver is installed it is.

Also the G450 is a die shrink of the G400, there is a good chance the drivers for this chip will work.
