Every time I download something in Firefox, any type of file, .exe, music, etc, the downloads window appears. When it finishes, the "Downloads completed" box in the bottom right corner of my screen pops up. But then the downloaded item disappears from the downloads window. Any help?

I use IE7, too. It has everything I need. A nice skin that matches windows vista, windows live messenger 8.5, AND my monitor, it has tabs like firefox (for those tab fanatics) and a great popup blocker!
Try this. In the address bar type in about:config, then in the Filter type in download, then look for the following line,
browser.download.manager.retention
the value should be set to 0, right click, select Modify and change it to 1. Restart Firefox. Now it will retain what you have downloaded in the Download box, at least until you close Firefox. If you want what you have downloaded to be there always (or until you remove them manually) then set it to 2.
