    8800gt's 256mb vs 512mb

At the store i am getting my new pc from they have just got in stock the 256mb version of the 8800gt. what is the difference of these cards? can they both run dx10 or dx10.1? can the 256mb run games like cod4 or crysis? also the 256mb is AUD$70 cheaper.

Of course the 256mb can run the games but the mem amount might and will be bottlenecking the card at higher resolutions. How much it will affect the end result is dependant on the settings and game titles.

I'm not sure about them being DX10.1 compatible though. Unless this card will be a heirloom handed down from father to son then I wouldn't worry about it since DX9 dies hard after a long struggle and game companies are not enthusiatically going solely to DX10 yet not to mention making the game only to DX10.1.

does it help that i probably wont be running above 1280x1024? would the 256mb be alright for games like cod4?

It would help. But you'll never really know what game comes along and really has higher demands for the memory.

Personally I would not buy 256MB high-end card. Even 320MB 8800GTS sometimes has not enough memory and suffers from it. Sooner or later I would regret it.

DX10 is (currently) Vista only, so I don't get your question?
The 8nnn series supports both DirectX 10 and DirectX 9
10.1 is backwards compatible, so you will still be able to play 10.1 games on your 10 card.

Yeah you really don't want to buy a card with less then 512 of ram, running at you're monitor's native res and with AA on you will need more memory.. I run at 1920x1200 on my 24" LG and most game's have 8xAA, cept for the newer game's like cod4 I ony run 2x aa but when you have 1920x1200 you don't need much aa..

wow.... you guys are lucky. My x850xt struggles in cod4 with 1280 x 1024, my friend with his 7950gx2 or whatever also tried at 1280x1024 and it lagged a little too.
