SLI Help

I have two 8600 GTS cards, same exact model and I cannot get them to work in SLI.

I originally had one, and just got a second.

I have an ASUS A8N SLI mobo. I set the chip on the mobo to the SLI position, plugged in the extra power cable to motherboard, and plugged in that bracket like thing that connects the two cards.

I booted up my PC and it said "Found new hardware 8600 GTS" but yet I cannot figure out how to enable SLI.

I searched the help file in Ntune and it said to go under SLI configuration under the nTune settings, but I do not have that options, no where in Ntune do I see anything about SLI.

My Drivers are up to date across the whole system.

Any ideas?

Make sure options are set to advanced and that you have accepted that warranty style thing in Ntune. It opens more options.

That worked, I enabled SLi but how do I know if its working? I enable the verification thingy that the help file said to but I am not seeings anything different on my screen.

Get in a game and turn the FPS meter on :p

Go into Ntune. Look at the menu bar, goto 3D Settings, select 'Show SLI Visual Indicators'.

You may have to choose what graphic setup you want for the game. Goto 'Manage 3D settings', choose your game from the list, then in the seings area scroll to 'SLi Performance Mode' and select one of the three other than 'Single GPU'. Alternate frame rendering 1 is where every odd frame is produced on the primary gpu and every even frame is produced on the secondary gpu. Alternate frame rendering 2 is the opposite. And Split-frame rendering is where the one gpu displayed the upper section of the screen and the other displays the lower section of the screen, I find this mode increases FPS.

Cool thanks, I put the split frame rendering on, but I have to do so every time I restart, is there anyway to get the setting to stick?

I have the show SLI visual indicator thing checked to on, but it does not come on. Any ideas as to why?

One last thing, if I had SLI enabled, why does it set the SLI mode to one card by default, doesn't that defeat the purpose?

You shouldn't have to re-apply the settings every time. Just set it up and make sure you click Apply.

If the indicator isn't appearing then its more than likely that SLi isn't enabled.

The change the default setup click the 'Global Settings' tab and it up there so that the SLi performance mode is the way you want it. Problem is with this not all games/applications are compatable with an SLi configuration. An example of this is Crysis not liking the split frame redering mode (Grrrrr!).

That seems to have worked, I have a line on my screen now in-game, I guess thats the indicator, I turned it off, thanks a ton for all the help, appreciate it.

When I first put second card in, while the SLI mdoe was set to single card I went into cod and set the option of Dual video cards to yes.

I just now did what you said and while it worked I actually got 20-30 frames less then when the SLI setting was set to single GPU any ideas as to why?

EDIT:

When I use split frame rendering I average 50 frames when I use single GPU or one of the other two types I get the same frame rate, an average of 65 what gives?

Some games don't fully support SLI, not sure how CoD works, i know its in the menu and stuff but not sure if it totally works, i've configured mine through Nvidia Control Panel and it seems to help.

Mess about between Alt-Frame rendering 1 and 2 aswell as Split-screen, see which works better and if its the case that single is best stick with that.

CoD actually has an option in settings which allows you to turn on "multi-gpu". So i guess it does support it.
