Overclocking on a Intel

Hello,

My friend recently bought a quad core intel that was around $300 on newegg. Anyway, he basicly wants me to overclock it for him. Problem is I'm an AMD guy. Can anyone link me an extensive guide on how to overclock his platform? If its very similar to overclocking an amd platform I shouldn't have too much trouble.

Its more or less the same as with AMD ones. The difference lies in the motherboard.

My Q6600 is now at 3ghz.

Well, on AMD's you have to drop the Hypertransport and memory before raising the fsb. I know there is not a hypertransport on Intel's but is there anything equivalent to it?

Many ways to do it. Assuming you have PC-6400 800MHz RAM, you can just drop the multiplier to 8x, put the FSB to 430MHz, and let the motherboard handle the voltages if it can (mine automatically varies the voltage). Then up the FSB until the RAM can't handle it, and fall back a few MHz, test, and adjust from there.

Or you could have the full multiplier, put FSB at 400MHz giving 3.6GHz CPU frequency, and up it or down. I'm not too familiar with how quad cores overclock so you might have to up the voltage slightly to hit 3.6GHz. You should still be able to do all this on air cooling (my friend's G0 quad hovers at just 10-13*C idle with stock clocks, on air, Akasa 965 cooler, low ambient temperatures around 10*C-20*C).
