Decided to try and build a computer..

Been looking round some websites that give advice etc so i've decided to take a look at some parts and see how much the computer I want will roughly cost.

These are a general idea of what i've come up with. I'm wondering if you could tell me if i've made a boob somewhere and if it's all compatible.

Sorry if some of the items I chose seem ridiculous, i've got very little knowledge on this sort of thing.

Processor:- Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - £149.99

Keyboard/Mouse:- Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 - £22.99

Comes to a grand total of £976 inc VAT (Prices above are mostly without VAT)

Buying a 22" moniter at a later date.

Feel free to recommend me different parts that may be more ideal in terms of cost if I have gone a bit overboard. Also, is there anything I may have missed out?

I just want a system that can play both BF's and COD4 etc on full settings.

stick to 2gb ram if you getting 32bit vista,
also look to change your motherboard to the p35 chipset

edit; wait for monday when the 8800GT's will be around well on OcUK anyways their price is ranging from £130-£180 and the benchmarks so far show they're better than the 320/640 GTS

Thanks for the advice. I thought 4GB of ram might have been a bit on the high side.

Is there any point in me really getting the 64 bit version of Vista if i'm only using my computer for general use and some gaming?

Why will I need to change the motherboard to the p35 chipset? (Not questioning you, just hoping to pick up bits of info and tips as I go along). Can you recommend me a good motherboard with this chipset on www.overclockers.co.uk?

the board you have selected is the Asus P5W DH Deluxe (despite the crap name that dabs gave it ), only problem with this board is i dont think it can run Quad cores on the current bios and to flash the bios you need to use an older CPU ie a Pentium 4, so getting a P35 board you will be ready for Quad cores and the new 45nm CPU's coming next year (saves upgrading twice).

this board is the upgraded version of the P5W :),

not really much difference between 32/64bit vista apart from the max ram you can have i suppose it will be good when more DX10 games get released but for the moment not much need,

That MB is about same price so that's no problem.

Is the rest all compatible? If so i'll order it all in a few days. Then spend hours sweating over how to put it all together hehe.

Just out of interest, how much would you say a company would try selling this computer for? I've heard you save a lot building your own.

they would add labour charges which end up being a fortune, probably somewhere near £1500,,

A 8800gts is the biggest overkill for a 15" i have ever heard.

If possible, dig deep and find an extra £150 and you get get a nice flat screen 22". Otherwise, save money by both only selecting 2gb of RAM and go for a Core 2 Duo model as opposed to a Quad.

Yeah I know but i'm not going to have this moniter forever. I was thinking of buying one sometime in the future when my wallet has recovered from buying the rest of the system. :laugh:

And I definately want Quad.

well youve saved £60 from the ram, perhaps another £50 from the Graphics if you get a cheapest 8800GT, £40 more and you have a 22" monitor

xp64 bit edition is hard to come buy these days, however i can get it free from the university i am at

Get a P35 chipset for sure.

Also, keep in mind that Creative Labs sound cards and 4GB of RAM do NOT mix, you'll be throwing errors left and right with that build. Get something like the Auzentech X-FI, sorry, X-Meridian.

I believe the drivers are for the fail. But it may become more popular in the future.

yeah creative x-fi + 4gb ram + vista 64 has problems and its annoying =/ other than running games with no sound its absolutly fine..
