    Lan server for 32 players

I'm hosting a Lan Party for 32 players on saturday. We want to play vanilla BF2 all night long.

Do i need a pure server?

Can i get away with a play and serve pc?

What specs should i go for to get a reasonable game going?

    1. Yes. A pure seperate server is recommended.

    2. Playing and serving will put alot of strain on your CPU. Depending on what kind you have, you may experience lag, or worse, your server will lag!

    3. As for specs, any 2GHz Pentium or equilevent will suffice. 512mb of memery. This is recommended. It would probably run on less though. Any modern (new) computer should be able to handle it.

What are you planning to use?

We have some P4 available... I guess we could just have one with 512 or 1 giga of ram...

I have never run a pure server... how do i start one and what should i know about it?

Honestly I've never done one for a lot of people. I made a server for the BF2 Demo for me and two of my friends once though. Super Easy. Got it setup in ten minutes.

Don't stress too much about meeting the recommended requirements. Pretty much any P4 system should work.

This Link seems like a good guide. If you still need help, just post. Someone will be glad to help.

Hope this helps and Good Luck! :)

My roommates and I used to play a lot on out campus LAN. I used to run the server on one core, my game on the other core. None of us ever lagged, even with 10-12 people playing across campus.

there is also the FFolkes mod that gives each class all the weapons that class can use. should be fun for lan.

              .pdf document

the mod is discontiuned but you can still find it.

OK, so we had the event, and it turns out that i didn't need a dedicated server.

My notebook, a HP DV9000 with 2 gigas of ram, Dual core, GeForce Go7600 and Vista, did the job just fine and never took a dip in FPS...

We got to 29 happy lan partiers! I was serving like a regular LAN game, launched from within the usual in-game browser window, and never touched the dedicated server program.

Thanks for the tips and recommendations!!

(i'm posting this in case anybody else does a search on that same topic and wants to know how it went down)

Same. Good info to know. I too was thinking about having a small LAN party, and now I know that I don't need a dedicated box. So thank YOU for reporting back with this info.

Oh and what res/settings do you play at and how's your FPS? (I'm curious)

All medium settings, and 1024* whatever (i can't get the widescreen resolutions to work on this laptop for no apparent reason). I never took a dip in FPS, even though in strike at kharkand for 16 players, all 26 of us were really close together.
