Hard drive problem?

I'm having issues with my hard drive. I have a 250gb hard drive and one day before I turn my computer off, I'll have about 170gb, and the next morning when I wake up, I'll have 165gb. It went down without me doing anything.
Yesterday I had 140gb of free space and I uninstalled about 5gb worth game demos. When I had finished uninstalling everything, it said I had 175gb of free space. Now today, without doing anything but browse the internet, my free space has already gone down to 161gb.

I downloaded and ran TreeSize and it said my C drive (my only drive) is using 46gb, but when I open windows explorer and right click the C drive and go to properties, it says I'm using 61gb.

I don't have any viruses (just finished a scan) and I did a disc defrag earlier today, too. What's the problem here?

I just downloaded CCleaner and noticed that after downloading and installing it, I was down by 1gb of free space. So I decided to uninstall ccleaner to see if I would get that 1gb back, but I didn't. So now I'm down to 160gb

Two hours later: Randomly went down to 154gb now lol

WinSxS folder, in C:\Windows\WinSxS, size of that?

Could it be auto restore points or something? I remember I deleted my recovery points after a while and it was like 7 gigs. Just an idea.

minicoop, care to explain what recovery points are, and how to delete them?

I wonder if your computer is dumping a load of stuff from the memory into virtual memory (on the hard disk). If there is a program error or something it could be using up resources and dumping a load of data onto your disk (alternatively, i could be talking a load of balls)

I'm using 1061M/7557M paging file, and 1gb/3gb RAM.
Is that what you meant?

To be honest, it was just a thought. I have no idea how it may happen or what to do. Just an idea to work with :)

sounds like spyware or a replicating virus to me... scanned good for stuff?


However I'm also curious if the drive still shows that whole space full or not.. if its not then it may be failing sectors.

Have you got W32.Windows installed? It's a virus that's been around since the early 90's and has been propagating ever since.

Yes I've done a virus scan and it came up with nothing.

thats a start..but something is replicating or the drive is bad.

Yeah well I checked again today after school and I'm down another 4gb. I'm at 150gb now. Again, I didn't download or install anything.

It happened while I was at school and my computer was turned on. I know someone else in my house couldn't have downloaded anything because no one was home.

I would suggest backing up all data you wish to save and re-format that sucker... if it does it after a format then I suggest contacting the maker of the HDD for a RMA or warranty return.
