On [ Vista] what tasks can i end to improve BF2 game-play, it normally runs fine ,in game settings are set to medium but sometimes when i spin or turn picture jerks a bit . [ea support] not helping

It's not exactly the background it can be a SLEW of other factors.
I know beacuse i use Vista as well.

I normal end AIM, Task Scheduler Engine, Any "Media Player" task, my anti-virus stuff, Macrovision FLEXnet Connect Scheduler, Windows Defender DEFINITELY!!, and CyberLink PowerCinema Resident Program (I find Firefox freezes alot after that o.o).

You may not have some, I use 32-bit Premium, so yeah. It improves a little bit, but if your vid card and RAM and such aren't sufficient you'll still have trouble. Also make sure nothing is downloading and any other computer in your house is either off, not downloading updates or anything, or not connected to the interwebz.

In the BF2 manual, it says to end all processes under your username EXCEPT taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe.
Don't end anything under "Local Service", "Network Service", and "System".

Something like that. You don't have to install most things like mouse and keyboard drivers unless you need advanced functions (like non-standard DPI adjustment on Logitech mice).

Here's my barebones service config (fully functional):



In the registry, go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSRV and in the "DependOnService" entry, remove everything except for RPCSS (you can just blank it completely if you wish). That removes the pesky dependencies and allows you to run the Windows Audio service without its sister services, MMCS and Endpoint Builder. Endpoint Builder is required whenever you plug/unplug an audio peripheral, or when installing or reinstalling audio drivers. Otherwise, it can be stopped. Set it to Automatic BEFORE installing drivers, then set it to manual afterwards. In that service config, prefetching & task scheduler are disabled.

It's more or less XP, just called Vista. Still has a performance hit from XP, sometimes better performance, sometimes worse. I noticed in 3DMark it would vastly outperform XP in the SM3 test but go straight down in SM2, with anti-aliasing forced on both tests. Strange?



You can trim the fat right down to XP level, but I have a better method: Buy XP.

How much is XP now, anyway? Is it less than $30? If not, then you're better off keeping vista and buying another gig of ram for $30
