    7600 gt dust build up

i noticed my 7600 gt has built up a lot of dust again, but i cant seem to rid my entire pc of dust. I saw screws on the bottom of my video card that attaches the heatsink and fan to the card, and was wondering if it would be bad to remove it so i can get into the fan easier? the dust is really built up and i really dont want to buy a can of compressed air to clean it out. Its running significantly hotter now too.

So is there a risk of damaging it if i temporarily remove the heatsink to clean it out?

      Read what he posted.

And, as for removing the HSF, you can, but you will have thermal grease/paste to put on the GPU when you refit it, and i doubt you have any handy.

Personally, just buy the compressed air. It has tons of usages from clearing fans, cleaning the crap out of your keyboard to spraying at people.

Remove the card, remove the screws, etc. If you can't use compressed air, use a vacuum cleaner while grounding yourself and the card.

no reason to take the hsf off until after you've used compressed air. they are buy one two-pack, get the second free at orifice depot.

if you do use compressed air on it and find that getting the dustbunnines out doesn't lower your temps to acceptable (> 80C) temps, then it's time to think about reseating your gpu cooler.

They go cheap, and they are usually sold at any hardware store like B&Q or Homebase.

                  This one,

at any Wal-mart for $9.00. Tried most of the cheaper ones and this one lasts the longest (also doesn't smell like most of the others. If you do pick one up and use it, make sure to stick a pencil or something in the fan to stop it from spinning when blowing or you can kill the fan.

I bought a air compressor for the job shortly after I built my new rig. Havent had to use it yet though which makes me feel like I wasted 70 bucks on it. Oh well, was half price so can't complain.
