New Purchase? Help me decide.

Hey guys, i have recently received $160 (australian) for my b-day and was wondering what to spend it on...

My old graphics card has just died (6800gs 512mb AGP8x) and its time to get a new one. I was wondering if the 7600gs 256mb card is good for $132? I play on a 19" monitor at 1024x768 in games.

A few questions:

1. will my 400w PSU be able to handle it?

2. will the 7600 perform better than my old card?

3. is there a better AGP card in the same price range?

i think it the 7600gs will be slightly better than the 6800gs but i htink u can do better. im pretty sure there are better cards for a cheaper/simliar price.

All of the rest of specs would be necessary to answer your psu question; what is the make/model of your PSU?

This one is four dollars higher if I did the conversion right, and if Aussie prices are similar to U.S. prices, and it would be a MUCH better card than a 7600 series (similar performance to a 7900gs or gt, depending on the game).

Whether your psu is up to snuff depends on the amps on the +12v rail (look on your psu), your processor, and how much other stuff you've got plugged into it.

6800GS to a 7600GS is more of a step sideways than an upgrade,

For AGP as long as the rest of the system is up to it (psu, cpu, etc) I wouldn't look at anything less than the card that megawhompertoo linked to.

400W is minimum for you total system, with a fairly hefty margin of error thrown in, so that it's 400W for a reasonably well-configured system.

Is your p4 a prescott or a northwood? Arghh. They both can dissipate +100W by themselves.

You might still be ok, depending on your +12v rail, but your processor is pulling a lot of juice, either way.

x1950pro can use upwards of 70W under load, which gives you a total of ~180-200W under extremely heavy loads for your CPU + GPU alone (not likely you're ever going to max them both out simultaneously).
