Last time I checked you both couldn't even use that card even if he did buy you one each to test. So in that case, send'em both over my way and we'll see how they add up!
But as for seriously answering the question it really depends on your screen size and resolution your playing at. The 640 may not be necessary if you play at lower resolutinos but hey, doesn't hurt to have it either.
Personally though I'd wait a month or two at least until you buy it. I thinkers the next series suppose to be out soon which means a) 8800 is cheaper and b) true DX10.1 support in the 9xxx series.Comment

Hmmm, i wouldn't count on the 9series cards coming out soon. Nvidia are under no pressure to release anything, there are numbers still available (E.g. 8700, 8800gt), and there are not enough games to justify the release of 9series. I would expect to see them squeeze the life out of the 8Series cards, and then sometime next spring, bring out the 9series.Comment

I think Jakg is right about this one. Only really low end cards use system memory for graphics memory. If the GPU runs out of memory, it will just not cache as much as it could have if it had extra memory. I'm fairly certain the GPU doesn't access system RAM. My X1950Pro always runs out of texture memory when I play but I still get decent framerates most of the time. Of course I wouldn't see as much stuttering if I had more GPU memory.
As for Sniper, If you're gaming on at 1680x1050 or less, I say get the 320mb version. Having the extra memory gives extra performance at higher resolutions where there is more data to be cached. And running out of memory isn't as bad as it sounds.
But why are you upgrading? Doesn't E6750 + 7900GS = Awesome performance?

All G80 GPUs address system RAM AND VRAM. It uses system RAM a lot, use Rivatuner with the vidmem plugin and you'll see. It rarely saturates the 320MB on my 8800GTS (usually around 270MB) but it's using 470MB or so, and 200MB is on system RAM.
It's only because I said "Turbocache™©" that you two got uppity.
So anyway, are you going to SLI® your WD Raptors? Lemme guess, Raptor's don't support SLI, right?

Can you help me understand what's going on with my card? I'm using ATI Tray Tools, and I've enabled the on-screen-display thing so I can see all this info when I play. It shows three options for memory: FVM, FTM, and SMU. They stand for Free Video Memory, Free Texture Memory and System Memory Used (by process). On the BF2 home screen, FVM=266, FTM=512, and SMU=117. Actually playing the game gets : FVM=0, FTM=232, SMU=850. Everything makes sense except for the Free Texture Memory. There is only 256MB on my graphics card so how can I have 512mb free? Is this texture memory coming from my system memory? (I would assume so....) And is this texture memory included in the SMU or not?
Thanks for any help and for not flaming me for my ignorance.
