omfg my lappy shopping is going horrible.

Ok so if you guys are familiar with me posting about this like one or two times ago as far back as a month and a half to as little as three weeks ago, your prolly gonna slap me....

But to the point, the lappy I wanted to buy has been out of stock for over a week now and I'm a very impatient person. So I've gone back to the decision boards of which one to buy and with that a few questions have come into my head again.

    a) 8600M is my target video card. Question is, which is better, the GS or GT?

I did my own research and found through other forums that the GS has half the stream line procs but has a faster clocked speed. As one person put it in there, it was like a p4 (gs) vs a c2d (gt) in a way that the p4 can have a high clock vs the lower clocked c2d but still have its a55 handed to it.

There were some benchies that went with these and they did seem to agree but again, there is nothing official I have found.

    b) Should I look for a 512mb version or will the 256mb be ok?

    c) WTF does 2GB drr2 667mhz ram + 1 GB turbo memory mean?! Are they trying to say that 2gb is dedicated to system memory and a third gb of ram is dedicated to the video card or is it another market gimmic BS and its just the 2gb of ram sharing with the video card?

Now onto the lappys I've been looking at. The first one is the one I'd like to get but is out of stock but for $1,200. This one does not indicate which 8600 is in it, so I'm assuming its a GS.

The next one is also a ASUS brand lappy for $1579.39. I really like this one because it comes with a lot of nice features over the previous one I wanted to get like finger print reader, a 8600 GT, an E6420, and a camera.

Hmmm... I thought I had more to look at but I guess thats it unless its a different sized screen... Yeah I'll have to check the other screen sizes to see if I had another choice.

So if I can get some answers for my questions, speculation on the selected lappys and possibly linx to better deals, all would be appreciated.

And please no one tell me to look at the over priced DELL lapppys and similiar money wh0ring corporations like HP. I've already looked and well, if you couldn't figure out why I'm not getting from them yet, uhhhh... Ummm yeah, don't bother okies?

            a) GS vs GT doesn't matter much. Realitive to a desktop, they both suck. I don't think this is a place to fret over. I'd be more concerned about "having a graphics card" rather than finding the tiny differences between two of the slowest models. GT should be faster.

            b) 512mb on a 8600GS/GT still sucks. Most of that extra memory will come from your RAM anyways. 512MB isn't necessary, especially on a notebook. You won't tell a difference if there is one at all. (This is kinda like 512mb 7100GS, great 512mb of memory!, too bad the GPU sucks)

            c) Turbo memory is when your graphics card uses system memory for graphics RAM. YOU DO NOT WANT THIS!!

I don't know of any place to get a decent laptop. The key question is what you will be using it for. From what you picked out, I think you'll be trying to play games on it. Note that you won't get very far with that unless you get a "gaming notebook". The ones you picked out are like notebooks "with graphcs cards". They'll play games, but not very well. If you're really looking for performance, you want a 2GHz (mobile) Core 2 Duo, and a mobile 7900GS or mobile 7950GT. That will make for some good gaming. If you're not planning on spending that much, I'd strongly urge you to get a mobile 8600GT with GDDR3. (The GDDR2 version has almost half the memory bandwith as the GDDR3 version). You still want to stick with a 2GHz C2D.

Just for reference, I have an Thinkpad T60. 2GHz Core Duo (not C2D), and a Radeon Mobility X1400 (512mb), and 1GB of DDR2-667 RAM. Its not bad at all. I actually really like it. Pretty speedy for a laptop. And it even plays BF2 (demo)! Of course everything on low @800x600. But it puts out a steady ~30 FPS, which isn't too bad.

            Hope this helps. :)
