because, they sell 2x2gb kits. Where as to make up 3 gigs you gotta buy a 1x2gb kit and a 1x512 kit. WHHYY WTF?!? This fills all your slots and some motherboards find this cluster**** of memory difficult to dual channel with or even run at full speed. Not to mention, now if you want 4 gigs or more memory you gotta throw out that rubbish set of 512s. The 3 gb setup is probably going to cost you just as much as a 4 gb setup... MAYBE MORE. so just get 2x2.

I said 2gb actually because of the limitations of what Vista and XP 32bit can see (i think its 3.2gb). By the time games and apps actually need 4gb, i suspect we will be using DDR3. Thus, he should save his money!

6 years? Wouldn't say that. The lifespan gets shorter and shorter and shorter. Look at a card from the GeForce 2 era, they can keep up with some of the newest low-end cards. There are people still rolling (more like wobbling) on 5200s. How likely is it that 8800s will be able to even play games well in 3 years?

The only reason you would need 4GB nowadays is for heavy multitasking, meaning that 4GB per process limit is quite irrelevant.

all I'm saying is the comibination of 2X1GB & 2x512MB memory kits is in many case (by checking newegg prices) is going to cost more money that just buying a single 2 x 2GB kit.

So you'll be buying less for more.

All I'm saying is I thought Vista machines with 2GB were using all their memory. If you wanna have more memory so you dont hit the wall, get the 2x2GB cuz its cheaper. Amount of posts doesn't equal knowledge.
