Another question about RAM...

So I just bought 2GB of PC2-5300 667mhz RAM for $50 and my computer already had 1GB of the same kind of RAM. When my system was idle with 1gb, it used up 500mb of ram. With 2GB, it was still using 500mb when idle. But now with 3GB, it uses up 700 - 800mb.

Why has it suddenly increased?

I haven't installed any new programs or software since I put them in. Also, sometimes while watching the CPU usage, it'll jump up to about 40% and then go back down to 0% - 5%

My specs:
Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1ghz dual-core
geforce 8600GT
3GB PC2-5300 667mhz
250gb sata
windows vista home premium

4.6gb paging file (incase anyone needs to know this)

update: right now I've got 1 internet explorer browser up, msn, windows media player and azureus (downloading 1.8gb project reality) and all that is using up 2.15GB of ram

hmm, I'm not quite sure why the RAM usage would increase after installing more RAM. From what I understand a RAM usage increase would only happen from what your doing on the computer, programs, software, etc. Although, I'm not sure how the computer takes from each RAM stick, I doubt that would be the case.

Try doing a Google search on Vista's memory management, and then stop worrying about it.

well its probably got something to do with the virtual memory in windows. Its probably set on a system managed size. So when windows saw that you have way more memory available, for your performance, windows decided to use less of the virtual memory (on the hard drive) so you won't have any cache lag. Like when you play a hardcore game and you only have 1gb memory, anything over flowing the memory barrier goes to the hard drive creating lag. Well windows tries to keep some of its crap on the hard drive so its not filling up all your memory while it does nothing. So now that it knows you have more memory, it keeps more on the memory. Its not a big deal.
