Should i upgrade my Socket 939 processor?

Im thinking of upgrading proccessor its an AMD 3800+ (single core) and i have a 939 pin motherboard the processors im thinking of moving up to are an Opteron 170/175 or an AMD 4400+

I heard the opterons are alot better for overclocking and run slightly faster than the X2 line of processors clock for clock so im swinging towards the opteron

I dont really want to change my board to a fit an AM2 or core2duo processor as that would mean i would have to replace my RAM also because its DDR 184 pin not DDR2 240 pin

Im going to build a new rig at the end of this year or early next year i just want a reasonable processor up until then as my current one doesnt play games like Supreme commander or Medieval 2:TW that great

    Any suggestions or reccomendations?

you will get a noticeable performance gain, but it won't be nearly as good as upgrading to a C2Duo.

I got my FX-60 in socket 939 for $139 a little while back from tigerdrect. I absolutely love it compared to my old 2900+. The FX-60/62 is still faster than most processors, especially those in its price range. Yes, the C2D QX processors are a lot faster and have 2 more cores, but the FX is no slouch either.

A socket 939 processor doesn't require a motherboard and ram upgrade as well.

Hence why I upgraded my processor, not my motherboard and ram.

            @ the OP:

Unless you find some insane deal on a 939 FX 60, I say don't upgrade. You'd only be putting money into something that can't be resused. Resist the temptation. IMO it's just not worth the money. Yes you will see improvements, but for $140?? I'd save the $140 to your next system.

depends on what $140.00 is to you. I did that upgrade when I had a socket 939 and it was a pretty good upgrade. And I payed more then. But saving and getting a socket 775 motherboard would be smart.

If you do decide to go for a dual core and aren't afraid of overclocking (and your motherboard is capable),

                http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=567

                with one of these,

                http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=57&subcat=821

will do. About as cheap as you're going to find new (without going ebay).

i dunno how much luck you're gonna have overclocking a late bach of processors. As production goes on with processors the build quality tends to get crappier a long the way.

Could be. My x2 3800 has been running at 2.6GHZ since shortly after I got it (about 3 months ago) at default voltage, and haven't tries to see how far it will go, waiting for cooler temps before trying (damn summer time heat).

when i did the 939 upgrade to a dual core i got one of the 1mb cache per core. I think that had a lot to do with the performance difference.
