8800 GTS Driver Issue.

Seeing as my computer had factory drivers i decided to update my graphics card drivers, a quick look on the net shows that "Forceware 163.44 BETA" is the latest one.

Now when i run it it gets to about halfway then the screen goes black, then a few minutes later it says "Out of range" and a few minutes after it goes blakc again.

I've left it doing this for about 30 minutes now and decided a hard restart was in order.

I presumed it was the drivers doing tests or something... but surely it shouldn't be taking that long.

Any suggestions on how to update my drivers? come to think of it, am i installing the right thing?

Specs:

E6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.4Ghz
Vista Home Premium
2Gb RAM
nVidia 8800GTS 640mb

Won't it do the same thing as the one im using? I don't like having to reboot my computer incase Vista decides to give up and not restart.

Relax, most drivers run in user-mode in Vista. You won't have to restart if the screen flashes on and off during driver installation.

You should never use nVidia beta drivers, from what I understand.

nVidia releases beta's at the same time they release new cards, reason being that they tweak their beta drivers to give better performance in synthetic benchmarks at the expense of display quality. the press gets the new cards + betas and report the results of the synthetic benchmarks. then nVidia releases non-beta's that restore quality to standard levels because consumers won't accept buggy butt-quality display, but it costs them up to 25% (recently) in benchmarks. the world+dog chalks it up to poor beta drivers, but the better benchies by blasted beta's are already out there.

it's quite a racket, and who knows how long they've been doing it?

I downloaded "163.69 ForceWare WHQL" and they installed perfectly.

Instead of me making a new thread, how do i see a sort of progress bar for the Defragger? I don't feel like downloading a 3rd party one but i've heard (Or read) that you can get more information if you use it via the CLI.

Any ideas?

Uh, just in the 163.69 release they solved a two year old grass corruption bug in BF2, or so it says in the WinXP release notes. The betas are useful, simple as that. I don't really care for synthetic benchmarks, in any case.

simple, yes. you just have to figure out what's been broken versus what's been fixed and how important each of the two are for what you use your computer for.

There is nothing wrong with running Beta drivers.. I've been testing drivers for years and I've seem at times way better performance out of Beta's than the WHQL's ... think people all that means is they are Microsoft certified.. ohh wow big deal!! LOL

The latest that have been mentioned on here should work fine for you just make sure you uninstall the old drivers fully first. But don't let anyone tell you Beta's are evil as they are sometimes a God send!

Absolutely. When Microsoft surprised nVidia by releasing Vista, Betas were a God send...more specifically, The Only Thing You Could Get.

Again, it all depends on what you need and (often) what trade-offs you're willing to make.

I've seen Beta's out perform on XP vs the WHQL's... that means nothing to me, its all about which one has the better performance and so far the Beta's have it. I'm sure if you slid over to guru3d ( a real tech forum vs this gaming forum) and just ask that question I bet a majority will say the same thing.
