Well, if you can't afford an 8800gts straight off, buy something cheap and cheerful like a 7900gs or 7900gt and then save up some cash to get a good upgrade. There is no point in going half ways.

Good suggestions.. I would jump to a 8600GTS at least.. I wouldn't drop to a DX9 card. Currently Crysis is set to scale down physics of the game if you use DX9 and whats to say other games beyond it don't do the same thing. At least with a DX10 card your ready a step closer with just needing Vista to get going with the increased physics. Plus the 8600GTS isn't that much of a price difference than the 7900's GT's and GS's.

I would ditch the soundcard and use the saving to upgrade the power supply to a bigger antec.

An AMD that does exactly what I wanted it to do - which is handling BF2 on highest settings without lagging. :) So I'm happy.

I wouldn't buy it.. plenty of higher end brands to choose from within that price range if not slightly higher that will offer more such as more PCIexpress slots etc.

surf on over to newegg and check browse through them.

Lower sound quality and slightly lower performance in CPU-dependant situations. To me, the difference between onboard and discrete is negligible (from Realtek HD audio to Audigy 2 ZS).

This setup will be good for DX9 games, but it's not future proof in any way, shape or form.

thats because the Audigy 2 isn't a terrific sound card.

I went from Realtek to an X-fi extreme music and the difference was very noticeable on multiple motherboards.

an 8600gt would be a noticeable step down from a fast dx9 card in terms of delivering playable frame-rates at decent resolutions with a couple of levels of AA added.

it would be interesting to read about "scaled down physics", though. got a linky?

I agree, but I've given up trying to tell people this. Go ahead get your 8600s. Its going to be funny when the people with 7900GTs are killing the people with 8600s because they have higher frame rates. Yeah sure the game won't look as nice, but really how much different is it going to look on an 8600GT? Its not like you'll be able to run anywhere near high settings on that card in Crysis... get real. So you'll be running low DX10 settings and DX9 players will run probably a little better settings if not high. Thats just an estimate, but if you ask me its closer to right than anything. A low end DX10 card isn't going to run any DX10 game in high settings.

Now, don't get me wrong, benchmarks on DX9 games with the 8600 do look pretty good, and you won't be dissatisfied. But there are DX9 cards that cost about the same as an 8600, if not a bit less, that will run anything out now faster than an 8600. The way I see it, if you buy an 8600 your just buying the low end future video card just to have DX10 ability. Which is a nice idea, but if I were getting a card to be slightly future proof I wouldn't with anything less than the 740 mb 8800GTS or X. Since I tripple buffer for vertical sync I really need more than 320mbs. That way I'll know when DX10 games become more of a standard, I won't need to upgrade because I'll still be playing on reasonable settings with the first series of dx10 cards, next year. But that again, is only a guess. Who knows games might become too advanced that the 8800GTs will just become the new 6600GT.

slightly off topic, there are people out there STILL snapping up 5200's in Best Buy, Circuit City, and Office Depot because of advertising on the box.

Same situation with the 8600 series: it never hurts to point out that putting "Fully DX10 Compatible" on a card with a 128-bit memory interface is--for all practical purposes--just an advertising gimmick:

Now I'm not questioning the power of a 7950, but with a constant 100FPS you won't die because of the frame rate.

Get real people. 8600GTS is a good card, I don't know about the GT though. If we're going to speak overkill machines, then leave me out as I am a not into overkilling stuff when it comes to computers.

Not questioning whether or not it's a decent mid-end part. The question was whether a gaming-minded buyer would get more benefit/dollar out of a faster, but more dated card for about the same price:

You need to clarify your "100FPS". You must be playing at 1024x768. And without AA or AF enabled in the game and in drivers. My X1950Pro with the system in my sig plays every setting maxed out at 1280x1024 with only ~40FPS, which is plenty fast. So there's no way your 8600GTS is 60FPS faster with the same settings. I'm assuming you call "high" whatever settings the "high" setting in the dropdown menu produce.
