Nice, but expensive Mushkin is renowned for high quality, but bloody expensive RAM. You could probably find the same performance for cheaper. Look at the OCZ Reaper modules. Got recommended very highly in Custom PC magazine for price Vs Performance

Waste... Your getting a small hard drive that only spares you a matter of seconds in most tasks. Get something bigger, and maybe RAID them in the future. E.g. Samsung Spinpoints are good Performance Vs Price

1)it's expensive

2) mobo: there are cheaper, better boards. look for a p35 (asus p5k is a good one) or a 680i (evga makes a good one for ~$100 if i'm not mistaken) if you plan on running sli someday.

3) your choice in ram is a waste of money, in my opinion. go with 4x1gb for ~1/3 the price. you are going to want a new system long, long before you will ever need another 4 gb (8 total is what I assume you're holding out for--don't).

4) themaltake isn't known far and wide for their psu's. there are some better options. pc power and cooling, antec, seasonic, hiper...all very good psu's. save money on ram and get a rock-solid psu.

5) $250 for 150gb raptor is going to leave you wanting more space if you do anything except play four or five games (burn alot of movies? have a lot of mp3's? prepare to thrash a single hd). and besides being expensive, they're loud. get a seagate 320gb for your media files unless you've already got a drive you're going to use.

Get the EVGA 680i mobo. They have like 7 different models to choose from to match your budjet on newegg too (I just looked).

Get a E6750 and OC it instead of a E6850, its just a waste of money and then buy a artic freezer pro 7 to keep it cool.

I'd go with 2x1 gb sticks instead for now. You don't really want 4 gb of ram because it will not all be recognized under 32bit OS and 64bit OS do not have as much freedom as 32bit. Not to mention 32bit for the time being is still faster than 64. If you could use a 32XP os I would recommend that. Either way, stick to 1GB sticks of ram for now as DDR3 is out and DRR2 should get cheaper.

As for your HD choice, don't waste your money on the X raptor. All it is, is a HD in a see through case and makes more noise than the standard models. If you want raptor, just get a normal 74 or 150 GB HD and get a WD cavier (or caviar not sure) or Seagate for storage.

I would not recommend Samsung though... From personal experience, my samsung failed on me and I will not buy that product from them again. You want quality, stick with Seagate and WD for HD's.

Ps. This rig you are building is very similiar to mine and I can tell you that you do not need a side panel fan for extra cooling. All you need to do is have all the fans set on medium and the top one on high.

nobody is really using x-ram, although it is very nice on paper.

better cpu for your money. good choice!

mobo is still $200. if you want...ok...but you can get just as good of a mobo for almost half price.

hd needs to say "seagate" because of the 5 year warranty, better acoustics, and...just....better, all around.

ram is better. cas 4 @ 800mhz will PROBABLY do cas5 @ 1066, helping out your cpu. that's what i do with mine.

heatsink is excellent. i'll sell you for $10 via ebay if you want (just upgraded to a thermalright)...but that is absolutely the best $50 cooler you'll find for $20 retail in the world. i loved mine; kept my pentium d 915 cool and i was overclocking by 1 ghz.

Nice new list, you take advice well :)

I would stick with the antec 900. It is a mid tower vs a full tower and those things are pretty f'n huge but it looks like its got pretty good cooling but so does the antec 900.

I have the exact mobo you picked out, I bought it for 300 CDN 5-6 months ago though. I can say that it is a great mobo to OC with, just make sure to manually set your ram voltage as the auto setting is 1.85 volt which is ok if your only using two sticks of pc8500... I went to 4gb and I started crashing because not enough voltage. Auto = 1.85 V and DDR2 needs 2.1-2.3.

You can probably get away with PC8500 ram if youd like, but 6400 is fast too. If you plan to OC it, make sure you check the temps (maybe touch them?) because I needed a ram cooling device when I upped to 4gb @ 2.3v.

I agree with mega, you should look at the warranty available for the HD you buy. I own a Seagate 320 GB HD and it is great. I think the name is barracude. When you can afford it, buy a 74 GB raptor and use it to boot your OS and play your main games (BF2).

I use the CD/DVD burner your buying and its great. I love that it is SATA, it makes things so much easier.

As for your sound... The mobo comes with Hi def 7.1 surround sound already so its not a big deal if you sit on a sound card for now. I think all you need is a Extreme musik/gamer card that contains the X-FI chip. X-Ram doesn't do anything or so I'm told.

For your Os I think all you need is 32bit vista home premium so you get all the word programs and what not for skool or something.

Lastly, good pick on the EVGA vid card. EVGA gives you a 90 day period to upgrade your GTS to any EVGA card for the price difference according to there site. "Step up program" is what its called.

Any hard drive can fail. I don't think thats a good reason not to advise one.

True, but all that hassel that it gave me... I don't think anyone should have to go through that. Thats why I said through personal experience... It's not a fact that samsung HD's fail or suck or anything like that... Just what happened with me...

I have the P6N Plat. Its actually a great board. People told you to get a 680i chipset and that it would be cheaper??

Most 680i boards are in the 200s and made by video card companies so they think they get to charge a lot more. (reminds me of when the X-Fi F4tal1ty came out) Overclocking on my board was a little different in the bios, but once I got used to it, it didn't hold back my E6600 whatsoever. The only place the 680i chipset is better is when you use SLi; It will allow you to use all 16 pipes per card. Considering most video cards don't use nearly all of the pci-e bus, its not really a big deal.

Whatever you decide to get, get aftermarket cooling because the stock intel heatsink is a lousy piece of crap that will slightly bend your expensive motherboard.

Yea I wasn't sure about which case to pick, cause full tower is easier to work on but mid tower is a lot smaller, ill probably go with antec 900 cuz the other just looks... bleh.

The bigger the case, the easier it is to keep the system cool. Steroid fans are always a plus. Don't get that cooler, its cheap and uses the intel style mounting. Try not to use that mounting, its awful.
