Your opinion on a new video card

Budget= Under 200 US
PC specs = 3500 AMD 939pin, 2gigs PC3200, current vid card 6600GT PCIE

Another question: Can I use an SLI supported vid card on a non SLI supported board. Sorry for the silly Qs, cuz I searched on Newegg, and most cards are SLI supported.

P.S Any thoughts on the 7900GT? should I get that instead of an 8600GTS? and why.

i wouldnt touch anything, no decent cards for about £100, well good AGP ones liek what im using but anything as good as a PCI-E16 would cost about £200+ in my honest opinion just save up alot more to buy a much better card

Imho, go with a 8800GTS or GTX if you can wait a while as around november the price on both will drop by at least £50 due to the 9 series liek the 9800GT

i dunno when you're planning on getting DX10, Vista, or a game that even supports directx10. But I wouldn't get any of those 8600s just for the fact that they only run 128bit memory. I'd get thet 7900GT. But you're going to want to look at upgrading the processor as well. That processor will bottleneck a 7900GT.

Current psu, the res you can/want to run, and whether you already have or are planning on running out and buying vista are factors.

You cpu is weak unless you're running at a very high res (+1600x1200).

the +$40 for an 8800gts ^^ mentioned would be money well spent, imho. (you could even run some dx10 eye candy, provided you have vista, something you wouldn't want do with an 8600)--edit, provided your psu was up to snuff, and you were planning on getting a spiffier cpu sometime soon.

Not planning on buying Vista, and I'm using a DELL CRT monitor with 1024x768? res.
I don't want to spend money on a new system or upgrading major things with my current system. All i'm upgrading is the Video card.

i don't favor ati over nvidia, but it's very hard to see somone choosing an 8600gt for any reason. a 7600gt would give you very good performance at that resolution (maybe give up 10-15%) for half the price, an x1950pro would do ~5-10% better than the gts model for $136, and x1950xt would deliver +25-30% for about $175.

the 8600 series carry a price premium because they are dx10 cards. the unfortunate reality is that they won't be able to push dx10 eyecandy at acceptable framerates at higher resolutions. since you've got no plans to something-grade (i can't bring myself to call it an upgrade) to Vista, there's absolutely no reason that i'm aware of that you'd consider an 8600.

if you're set on an 8600, any of them will run current games at your resolution very well with moderate eyecandy.
