Video Card Dilema

I'm looking for some advice here.
I'm In the market for a new video card, and a friend has offerd to sell me one of his x1950xtx 512mb's for $270. But the other card that I was looking at is an 8800gts 640mb for $370. Does anyone have any advice on what to get?
And also, my friend has offered to sell me two x1950xtx's for $500, is that the way to go?
Any advice would be appreciated.

If he's going to charge you 500 for both, tell him to go diaf and get an 8800gtx (it'll be cooler and run faster than both, trust me). Otherwise the gts and a single xtx will be pretty much tied. If you go for the xtx don't let him charge you more than say $230-$250.

need to know what sort of psu you have before recommend anything.

having said that, consider this one. $100 less than the xtx, $200 less than the gts, still a very, very slick gpu:

i had to change the fan to accommodate my delicate ears :) but an incredible card for $170, unless you're running a 22" monitor. for a 19", 1280x1024? no brainer. save your dough and get the xt!

oh, and you need a decent psu to run ANY of the video cards mentioned in this thread.

Get a 8800 or wait a few months and get a 9200 or 9800 series like me.

I would check your psu is up to the job, as megawhompertoo mentioned.

^Thorough, but dated vetting on this exact topic, and (since the benchies were done in xp) it doesn't account for nVidia getting surprised by the release of Vista (i mean, who knew?) and not having anything better than beta class Vista drivers for the first part of this year.

So, going off of that, it seems to me that the x1950xtx is ≥ the 8800gts, with the x1950xtx having a slight advantage at higher resolutions, and the 8800gts having a slight advantage at lower resolutions.

^interesting,the 1950xtx gives the 8800gts a run for its money there beating it in some benchies and coming very close in others,but still the 8800 has dx10 which will make upgrading farther away and so a much better investment.

^Yeah, well but I've read that the 8800's might not be able to handle the super high graphic new dx10 games that come out. So, you might need to upgrade again when the new 8900 series comes out. So, if you weren't going to play dx10 games until the 8900's come out, why not get the cheaper x1950xtx?
