Huge Pc Problems!

BTW THIS IS =[MI5]=RJW im using my old account as i cant get on my MI5 emails as the pw is stored on old pc and i cba to find it in my huge backup!

Basically i went to my pc this morning to turn it on and it didnt load up. The 2 fans come on and thats all it does. No input signal displayed on monitor and i can hear anything loading.

I then later went back to it and proded it around a bit and switched it on, this time it came on loaded everything fine, but i did not have keyboard in so i plugged it in and pushed F1 so it loaded XP but then keyboard was not working so i thought oh ok ill restart, so i restarted and guess what! The fans came on and then nothing happened.

I left it again for a while and then went back to it and switched it on and it came on! So i said oh i best back it up so i sent all my important files to this pc all 25gb of them and did a norton scan and a spybot s+d scan and nothing was found.

I have not installed anything lately!

This did happen on christmas day this year but then it came back on and i thought nothing of it.


But now its doing it again im gonna go give it another prod but atm its not coming on. So before i go pay £35 to have it checked out anyone got anything they would like to suggest?

2 X 512MB 3400 DDR
Nvidia 6600 256mb PCI-E
Maxtor 200GB
Creative X-FI pro gamer soundcard
300w PSU

Any suggestions??

Take everything off the motherboard except the CPU, RAM and video card (basically the bare essentials). See if you can get past the POST screen.

Use 1 stick of RAM, and swap them if needed.

sounds like your pc might've gotten a little bump. make sure all the cards and the memory stick(s) are fully inserted; mobo's will usually fail to post if they detects faulty contacts amongst components to prevent power fluctuations.

Im thinking hard drive. If i put in a old 5200RPM will this do any damage to see if this works as apparently Maxtor is crap but i dont know!

Maxtor isn't crap... I have a 300gb HD from a few years back at least. Samsung HD's are what you need to look out for.

ok so replaced the HD with old one it came on then i restarted and it went back to how it was ive taken out everything and tried that apart from ram cpu HD and still nothing. Im guessing its the BIOS but i cant get to that so im thinking it is the mobo

Sounds like your motherboard, possibly the SATA controller dying a premature death.

Maxtor isn't crap... I have a 300gb HD from a few years back at least. Samsung HD's are what you need to look out for.

nuttin' in the world wrong with samsung hd's in general. i couldn't recommend them since they dropped their three-year warranty (seagate still offers a fiver across their product line, for just a little more cash at the retail level), but i've had nothing but good luck with the Korean hd's.

edit--back on topic, off-chance that resetting the CMOS might help.

Hmmm, your mobo is one possible problem but it could also be your PSU. If the PSU isn;t good enough for you to remember who it is that makes it then chances are it isn't good enough to run a stable PC. Good thing is you can test it with another PSU quite easily where as a Mobo is gonna take a bit more work to test.

I've got a less than a year old Diamond 10 that says otherwise.

maxtor dont make crap harddrives, i use two 250gb's, but ive had problems like this.

Turn off the PC fully, and remove the battery from the motherboard, turn her on and then turn it off and put it back in, this will reset all the settings, also check that the psu isnt dieing or that connections are properly connected, as this Will cause big problems.

That's what i thought, so i bought two 80gb disks, and within three weeks, they broke. May have been unlucky, but i certainly won't be buying Maxtor's again.

Had 1 Maxtor too, it broke up :cry: Lasted several years thou, but it was the only Maxtor disk, and the only one that broke up

I've owned plenty of maxtor's, and never had a drive fail on me. All Maxtor drives are now rebranded seagate 7200.10's anyway so there aren't any more reliability issues.

sounds like a psu issue. Could be the motherboard as well. Usually if I make no hardware changes and suddenly the computer won't work my power supply has failed. I'd try a different power supply first. Power Supplies, Hard Drives, and ROM Drives are all way more prone to failure than other devices.


I've never had a cpu fail on me except when a heatsink fails. I've never had memory fail on me that has been in solid running order for more than a few months. I've only had one video card fail. I've had 2 hard drives fail, and about 5 cdrom/dvdrom drives. And no motherboards have failed on me, not even the last one I had which I experimented with a saldering iron and volt modifications. PSU have been bad to me, even good ones. I've probably had just as many psus fail as cd roms.
