    Cpu-z

I don't like cpu-z because it is unreliable.

I have a E6600 OC to 3.4 ghz with throttle turned off and multiplier set to 9x according to nvidia monitor and my BIOS. According to CPU-z my multiplier is 6x and occasionaly will jump to 9x but not for long.

Then my ram is rated @ 1066 mhz. Again, cpu-z thinks its lower and rates it at half the speed it runs at.

The latest copy of CPU-Z has a bug where it incorrectly show the CPU Multiplier as 6x rather than 9x. You'd think it would have been fixed quite quickly.

I'm sure if it was an easy bug to fix he would've fixed it already, I suspect its harder than most people seem to realize.

Besides, I don't care what his cpu is at, all I need to know is the brand and model of his mobo, which cpuz is the best at finding.

Yeah I remember you told me that months ago, almost 5 now wasn't it?

That still doesn't explain why my ram is rated half speed according to cpu-z either...

Oh well, I'm sure one day it will be fixed. I don't need it anyways.

It's not a bug, you just have Speedstep enabled. The CPU clocks down when it isn't being used to save power and then goes back to full pelt when you need run something? Never notice that it increased if you ran another task in the background?

Then wouldn't nvidia monitor pick it up too?

I've tried another program that shows you the clock speed and it reads 3.4 too. Only cpu-z reads 2.2ghz.

Bytheway, thats my E6600 that it thinks is 2.2ghz multiplier 6x FSB 377-378 and mobo FSB 1511.

            EDIT.

I tried doing that and I had bf2 open in the backround. At first is was the normal 2.2ghz but then I took the ctrl+alt+del window and moved it around the screen creating a load on the cpu which then brought it up to 3.4 ghz.

I wonder if that is the case with my ram too?

This is a common problem with programs that take their data from the BIOS (i think thats right??). Basically, it halves the speed because the RAM is working in dual channel mode which means it sends double the amount of data. I forget how exactly it works, but i seem to remember something about a wave, and data is sent at the top and bottom of the wave... Someone smart please enlighten me!!
Basically, it is working fine, and if you double the given figure, you will get your actual speed. E.g. As my mobo posts it shows my memory as running at 370mhz, whereas in reality, it runs at 740mhz. So, don't worry!

It's nothing to do with speedstep, i disabled that ages ago when OCing. CPU-Z is the only program that shows me a 6x multiplier, so it has to be a bug somewhere. Everest always displays it as 9x. Plus, if speedstep was on, it would also show the speed (in ghz) reduced in Intel Thermal Analysis Tool, which it never does.

This, however, sounds like you do have Intel Speedstep on. This is where the processor reduces speed to use less energy etc... it should be left on unless overclocking. There is a slight speed disadvantage as the processor speeds up again by changing the multiplier, but its so small, it would be hard to measure.
To disable it, visit your BIOS during POST (Power On Self Test (IE. The boot screen)). It will be under one of the CPU related tabs (i cant tell which as im not familiar with your mobo).

The x6 Muli thing is unquie to CPU-z, evn the sofware provided with my mobo doesn't pick up on the power saving down clock, but it is defiantly no bug.

                Looky here.

First picture is my system running the latest version of CPU-z, sitting there doing nothing but running CPU-z

                http://madcap_2000_chat.homestead.com/files/Quiet.jpg

The second image it my system running CPU-z with Super Pi doing a million calc in the back ground.

                http://madcap_2000_chat.homestead.com/files/Busy.jpg

Notice how the multiplier has jumped up to x9 (full speed for my E6600).

It's nothing to do with speedstep, i disabled that ages ago when OCing.
Yup and no. You may have disabled EIST or Intel Speed step (whatever your mobo calls it) but I am willing to bet you didn't also disable CIE (The enhanced halt state). You need to also disable that to fully prevent the CPU from clocking down to save power.

hmm... i changed the CIE, but i don't think i disabled it. If i take some screenies and pics, can you show me what to change please?

I think you may be right, its showing a 6x multiplier. Ill get a pic of my BIOS

                    Picture time again.

                    http://madcap_2000_chat.homestead.co.../Overclock.jpg

That's a pic of my system running a 3.0Ghz overclock. Notice how it actually says 2.8Ghz though. This isn't a fault of CPU-z but something unique to the P965 mobos. If you shut the system down and turn the PSU off the board needs to be repowered to implement the overclock. The Asus board does this by shutting down almost immediatly after the power button is pushed, the thing is the board still only accepts my 3.0Ghz OC as 2.8Ghz. To get the full 3.0Ghz I need to boot Windows then restart. Strange I know.

Alex see how the pic shows the muli at x9. other than the overclock the system is exactly the same as my first picture showing the system idle with a multi of x6. You have a similar board to myself since you have already disabled Speedstep it's safe to say you know where abouts to look to do the following.

Disable everything in the CPU set up menu apart from 'CPU TM Function' and 'Execute Disabled Bit' leave them Enabled. Set 'Intel Speed Step' to Automatic and Disable 'CIE'

That's how my system is set up and I have no problems with CPU multi dropping when I overclock, downside is as you can see from Asus Probe the idle temp rises by quite a bit.
