    Sound Blaster Audigy SE issue

    Hi,

I've recently bought this soundcard (cheap and i needed it for digital I/O)

I've just changed my settings in BF2 so that Hardware deals with sound.

    Hardware/High Quality/EAX enabled

everythings fine, the sound is in 5.1 etc etc

however the voiceovers are horrendous, they are so slow and choppy it makes the game unplayable.

its a minor gripe but a gripe nonetheless.

I've tried setting the quality to lower and still nothing, turned off eax, and nothing.

I've disabled the onboard sound with the BIOS as well and still nothing?

does anyone have any advice on what I can do? its getting a little irritating.....

Have you updated the drivers for the soundcard from the official Creative Site? Old drivers often contain bugs such as these which are flattened out in later revisions.

That's your problem right there. Cant get hardware sound when there isn't any hardware (EMU10K2 that is on the rest of the Audigy's) in the first place. Set it to software and it should be fine.

You can enable Hardware sound on Realtek HD audio, with EAX off I think. In Vista it's flawless, because it's rerouted through OpenAL.

Audigy 2 ZS for me :yay:

        No improvement in sound though.

Be a cute trick if that was true. Kind of hard for that to happen though when there are no OpenAL files in the latest Realtek drivers. Check out the Readme from the latest version R1.72,

Also if you do a search of Realtek's site for OpenAL,

          you get this,

Sorry! There is no data found. Please try another keyword.
Then again there is this little tidbit about Realtek audio,

Edit: Found an update to that origianl Tech report article dated May 11, 2007,

          seems things haven't changed any.

It's a Vista thing, not XP. In XP it crackles and pops. They took out certain things pertaining to audio in Vista and that's why it works (there is a workaround). I don't know about OpenAL, last I checked it had something to do with that.

I did get quite a shock trying to enable it on XP the first time. If it was 2 months ago I could have FRAPSed it.

Simple solution why your onboard appears to be running in hardware.

In Vista the only way to have hardware audio is to have a sound card that supports and uses OpenAL (Audigy 1-4 and all X-Fi's with the exception of the Xtreme Audio). If there is no OpenAL support in the cards drivers then a game like BF2 defaults to DirectSound3D which we all know is no longer supported in Vista, so all sound processing is done in software (and on the cpu) using Vista's new audio stack, regardless of whether it is set to hardware or software in the games settings.

I hear no difference between that and my Audigy.

Then either your headphones/speakers are broken, or your ears are.

Not at all. If anything, the Realtek has better positioning (Vista). The Audigy exaggerates the channel directions.

surely tho, there must be something right happening, the rest of the sounds are fine, they all come through my 5.1 as they should (Artillery fire in surround sound is terrifying!)

its just the voices that are messed up. surely that indicates a different problem

It is a stripped down version of the Audigy, with software-based EAX 3.0 (upgraded to software-based EAX 4.0 with a driver update), no advanced resolution DVD-Audio Playback, and no Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital EX 6.1 playback.
