freezing problems???

Hey guys,

I have been having problems for the last two days I have been playing bf2. What happenes is that the game will either freeze and I will have to hit the reboot button and/or the computer will crash to a blue screen and reboot quickly on its own.

My specs are in my sig and everything has been stable for 3-4 months now on the overclocks.

Personally, I think it has something to with my sound card as it cut out one time just before the game froze. Not to mention, when I play SC (star Craft), it will crash to desktop but after I turn off the sound in game I am fine...

I have a few options I am considering but I don't think I need to for example, reset the clocks back to defualt and remove 2gb of ram.

I had the same problem with freezing in BF2 when I did a windows update for my SB X-FI. about 2 weeks ago. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled & did not do the windows update and all is fine again !!! I think the windows update was cause of the problem. Good luck !

Do you have eax enabled?

Everything is maxed out - sound and visual @ 1680x1050 res with 16x AF 4x AA on video driver settings.

Nothing has been updated since I built the computer 3-4 months ago either... This thing is like dedicated to play BF2/music only. I haven't touched my drivers since.

Anyways, I tried going into the BIOS and reset the cpu core voltage back to auto after looking at the current value I had set was not sending out anywhere near the amount it was suppose to - 1.41xxx vs 1.36. So now things are working fine and dandy again and I updated XP tonight as well as my sound card. It ran fine without the updates last night and is running fine with the updates tonite.

So... All I can think of is that my computer decided to PMS on me those nights. Can't be overheating.... No way.

Eh weird stuff. but it happens.
I ran fine on 2 gigs of ram for about 5 months then it decided to dislike one of the sticks (both were different name brands), either of the sticks ran fine by themselves but when I put them back in the computer together it wouldn't work. It was like this for a few weeks then went back to work for some reason.

You've got the sound card in BF2 on the X-fi mode? And you've put the sound card into Game Mode in the X-Fi control panel?


You could also check the operating voltage for your memory. When it comes to DDR2, the memories can vary a bit from brand to brand. I ran my G.Skill sticks at 1.7Volts because thats what the motherboard defaulted to. That was way underpowered for the memory's rating of 2.0 - 2.1 Volts. Had to manually change that. Most blue screens involve the memory. But they also can leave you not knowing at all what caused it since windows error reporting is a joke.

to both of you...

1) I already realized it was just my computer PMS'ing at me for two nites. Nothing funky is happening anymore

2) Yes I have the sound quality through X-Fi and on ultra high, and its always on game mode setting.

3) The 4 gb of ram are the exact same brand/sticks. I did not mixy with other stuff. They are rated @ 2.3 volts and 2.3 volts I give em :). I ran into problems when I first upgraded the 2 ---> 4 gb of ram because the auto setting wasn't putting out enough to begin with (1.85...)

4) The error reporting does suck seeing how I can barely blink my eyes let alone try to read what the error was before the damn thing reboots.

5) No, it is not my ISP. When my internet stops I don't lose control of my pc... Totally different freeze with ISP.

It is ok, there is nothing needed from this thread anymore. Thanks for thoughts and suggestions.

I used to have BSODs a while back. I had errors in the file nv4disp.dll, which is an nVidia driver file. Updated video drivers, and voila, its fixed. I would also check creative's website for X-fi stuff/drivers and update them if I were you.

Yes, there was an Creative update I did and everything worked fine after. I got the latest vid drivers still I think. Will check now.
