8800 Gts

title says it all, will this card be a good card for games like Cysis etc?...I plan on getting the 640 mb version when I upgrade to vista. Also is my PSU strong enough for this card??

it's the best card on the planet, except for the gtx series, if you discount the "ultra's" and the invariable "superclocked" versions that you can just DO YOURSELF with a thermalright hr-03, ramsinks, a good aftermarket fan, and 30 minutes of free time.

you can't get any better (besides the gtx), and there's nothing better IMMEDIATELY on the horizon.

it's ridiculously expensive. i couldn't justify the premium price. my wallet is different from yours, though. :)

edit: depending on your res, i suspect your x2 4200 will bottleneck the card.

It would be average for Crysis IMO. Pure speculation but my speculation hasn't been wrong before :P

theoretically 36A across 2 rails (proly a little less what with efficiency loss, marketing specs v. engineering specs, and all) should be plenty, depending on how far you oc each component.


^that's my short answer.

i'm not and have never claimed to be an amd or nVidia guru, but i know that when i start heaping more voltage (and higher o'c) on my pentium d, it dissipates watts like a fat man in a buffet line dissipates lobster tails. amd cores are LESS power hungry than pentiums, and on par (power wise) with intel core2 processors but i honestly couldn't predict what an outrageous o'c on both components would do.

when i wake up in the a.m. (if you're still interested) i'll work out the max possible draw from both components based on TDW of the processor and max possible draw from the card, given the connectors and socket (top of my head, probably 150W for gpu, 70 for processor=210 watts; 12v*36A=432W(theoretical, not practical)-30%efficiency loss of +120W=~300W, except i'm almost sure that both rails won't give a full 18A simultaneously so deduct another 10-15%). that'll be a max ballpark figure, b4 o'c and before i stop drinking, so take it with a grain of salt.

in the meantime, have you upped the vCore on your processor? if so, to what?

and crap...now i can't recall if a pci-e connector provides 45W or 75W.

anyway, w/no overclock, you're a-ok. depending on how far you o'c either component, you may run into some trouble if you get too exotic with your speed or voltages.

If u want to play crysis with vista you will need the 8800.
Just don't get the Ultra...its just a publicity stunt

You wont be able to run crysis with maximum settings . There should be new release of 8900 series after/before crysis .

I dont plan on running maxed but at least medium with some high.

and mega, I'm not planning on overclocking until I see the performance for a few days I think the 8800 will be kickass even if it's not Oc'ed

I have a very similar setup, and my Antec 550w PSU works just fine.

Put it this way, the designers of Crysis used 8800 GTX's, and they play at all high with roughly 60-70fps, so i would assume the GTS 640 will play it all high maybe 40-50fps.

^^ Indeed they did, although i think that they are releasing some of that new very high end stuff as a patch, like they can unloack it, when the hardware is available to run it, as they would sill need to do a lot of testing and debugging it, as they themselves wouldnt have the hardware to run it either i dont think, or if they did it would be beta hardware.

well. "DigNews" said they got a copy of crysis and played it on a laptop with a geforce 8700m. so to playing it shouldent be a problem. to max it? i dont know.

Crysis has been played by the devs using the 8800GTX so why won't you be able to max out the setting when we buy the game?
