    Re: overheating?

ok so yesterday, i was using my computer and after about 5 hours...i noticed that the temperature increased by over 10C. my GPU was at 80C and still rising, my computer and CPU temp was around 56C...i was pretty convinced it would stil rise if i kept on using it. of course, you cant expect a computer to not heat up over time but is there any way to lessen the heat?

lol my GPU is like 60C after i just turned on my computer, so pretty much it rose over 20C in a couple of hours.

      Re: overheating?

Yeah that's about right. If you were able to run TAT you'd notice that the CPU temp would go up by 20C in the space of three minutes when you start to load it up. 80C for a 8800GTS is fine. You see the 8800GTS will automatically throttle the cooling fan dependant on temp.

Chances are at 80C the fan will be at about 75 - 80% maximum speed. You can artifically increase the speed to 100% if you wish by using Rivatuner. I did that and noticed a 7C drop in max temp. My GPU is currently at 52C and tops out at 68C

no im using windoes xp. and uhhh, i had like a weird restart a couple of minutes ago, it flashed a blue screen and had stuff writtem on it, but it just shut down and restarted by itself before i could read it.
BSODs are usually memory issues but without the text it's hard to say. What were you doing at the time?

mine feels like a heater also, no problems though, when i let it idle for a while the heat goes away

what a relief, can you tell me how to turn up the fan speed using rivatuner? that'll be a great help :)

            Re: overheating?

Yeah right click the little start symbol for Rivatuner in your task bar. The Rivatuner interface should open. There will be two drop down menus that have the word 'customize...' in them. Click the top on (it should have the name your GPU in it). A sub menu will open to the side. Click the first image (it kinda looks like a graphics card.)

This will open another menu if the box 'enable low level fan control' is not ticked then tick it. Now ensure the option fixed(--%duty cyle) is selected and then slide the bar beside that up to 100.

If you want it to be at 100% everytime you start Windows then tick the box that says 'Apply settings at Windows start up' and then click 'apply'.

                Re: overheating?

Here's a more complex method for the above (allows throttling depending on temps):

I know exactly the screen your talking about. My problem was with my ram. 4gb pc8500 @ 2.3 volts would cause me to reboot after a bit. I bought a cooling device by OCZ that clips ontop of the ram slots and no problems since.

If you really want to put a dent in the heating issue, buy another fan(s) and install it. If you are worried that your GPU is running too hot (which it isn't, those temps are normal) you can buy an i/o slot fan(s) too.

                  Vid card:

The one I bought from OCZ:

Those are some cheap methods of killing your heat problems. Mind you, These are Canadian sites as I'm not exactly sure where your location is. I'm assuming the usa, so just visit tigerdirect.com.

If you really want to put a huge dent in your heat problems, take off the side panel on your case and buy a big fan the same size as it. Put it next to the naked side of you computer and let the air blow! Woosh woosh! Elite cooling lol.

rofl haha, thanks a lot, i think the heat is ok now, gpu deosn't go above 60C and cpu is fine. well if i get more of those blue screens, i'll look into buying one of those fans.

Blue screen is usually driver errors

For the CPU get yourself TAT. It's Intels own C2D thermal analysis tool and is to date the most accurate one I have found. It also allows you to do 100% CPU load tests on both cores, again to date I haven't found any program that can stress test a CPU the way TAT can.

For your GPU get yourself a copy of Rivatuner. If you want to combine GPU temp and CPU temp you can also get the C2D plugin for Rivatuner, it's a degree or two off TATs readings at idle however under load it's about as accurate.

Finally if you're CPU and GPu aren't self throtting and you're not getting any unexpected shutdowns, crashes, freezes or other errors then chances are you don't have an overheating issue. Just for refrence the C2D CPU should be running at about 42C idle, 60 Loaded and has a throtting temp of 80C. Your 8800GTS should about 50C idle and 75C Load and has a throtting temp of some 100C
Ok, i didnt have a problem but thought i'd install the monitors just incase & i dont think i have a problem but check this out

I just played bf2 for about hr & half & soon as i quit i minimized & my ATI tool said 82C, is that ok? and then i hit my speed fan which took me a minute but it was way down on 60C

at the moment (5 mins after quitting bf2) my ati says 71C and the speedfan says 59C which is right? & is that normal??
                      Thanks:salute:

Those are alright temperatures. My 7600GT would never go above 75

Speedfan is wrong, the drivers are more accurate. GFX cards have 3 sensors I think, speedfan is configured to report from the wrong one here.

I use nvidia monitor - software that came with my drivers.

                            My temps idle:

                            CPU: 30-35 C System: 27-29 C GPU: 60

I haven't bothered to check the temps really too much while in game but this is what I have seen after exiting sometimes:

                            CPU: 40-48 C System: 30 GPU: 60-80 C
