x1950 Pro Yes/No?

I want to upgrade my graphics card sometime soon, but I'm not sure what to get.

I'm not sure of my budget yet, but I would say around 200'ish as I'm thinking about selling my old laptop, which would give me around 2-3 hundred.

So, with that, I'm not sure what to get. I was thinking an 8800, but those are pretty expensive still. Then I saw the x1950 (PCI-E). Would this card be worth to upgrade to? You can get them on newegg for around 150. I've heard that they are pretty good, and I won't be playing any dx10 games anytime soon, so what do you think?

Oh, and I would want to be playing on mostly high/medium settings of newer games at 1680x1050.

If there is another card you would suggest instead of the x1950, what would it be?

well I play COD2, CS.S, ARM.A, GRAW2, and it plays them fine..

I have the x1950 Pro right now, and it plays BF2 on high settings. I also play Test Drive Unlimited, also on high settings at a resolution of 1680x1050. It will be sufficient enough until DX10 is the norm.

In any event, make sure your other specs are up to par...especially the PSU. DO NOT USE A CHEAP PSU!!! They may state (in your case 600w) a certain wattage, but it may blow sending surges to all your insides. Dont get a high-numbered watt rated PSU, just because it is $29.99. Spend the extra $100 on a quality supply.

Hmm, I also play TDU, so thats a good thing. This card sounds like a good deal for now, until I end up getting vista + dx10 (which wont be for a while). I have a good power supply too, and I just got it a few months ago, so I should be fine with that.

Any other imput?

Sounds like a plan to me. What about an X1950XT? It has noticibly more hosepower than the X1950Pro, but not near 8800GTS speeds. So its in the middle. Here's a good deal at Newegg.

I doubt you can max out all the settings at 1680x1050 with the Pro, but I'm almost certain you can with the XT.

And as a side note the 7900GS is about equal to the X1950Pro in performance.

the xt looks like a good deal also. What I buy will probably all come down to how much I sell my laptop for. If I can get the xt, thats probably what I'll end up getting.

maybe fps wise, but feature wise? Not on your nelly!

Besides, us here in the UK deciding to get an x1950pro class card just have to look on ebuyer.com and notice the sapphire x1950xt is donw below the price of most models of x1950pro's and it gives 20% extra frame rates in BF2 over the x1950pro.

I just bought a load of gear to upgrade my Bro's pc and I snapped up the deal on the x1950xt (which makes me jealous, just having an x1950pro)

i've got the x1950xt. it is an awesome card. it only heats up in LOTRO, and that's probably because the metals in my thermal paste had settled before I applied.

my only gripe with the sapphire that ^ posted was the fan. a zalman vf900-cu fixed that right up, but added $25 to the price.

it's a fast, fast cheap card for under $200, esp w/rebate. if you have a giant lcd, then an 8800gts is the way to go. but if you've got a 19" (like me) up to a (maybe) 21", then the radeon card will keep you happy gamer until we see something in dx10-only flavor *we* (informed consumers) feel like buying.

my opinion: get the x1950xt for the long-ish haul if you've got a middling-sized monitor. it's significantly faster than the pro for newer games, and you can buy some bleeding edge games with the money you save from the 8800gts.

vf900-cu is good. not sure how a 700 would fare, if that's the one you have.

don't think you'll be dissapointed with the x1950xt tho. it's an oober fast card (BEST one price/performance wise), as the 1eet tyksterz like to say (or not).

Yeah, I'm not sure which one I have exactly, but if it doesn't work, I'll just go and order a vf900-cu. Thanks for the info.

also, very dependent on your exhaust. i'll post a jpeg of mine when i get back home from a meeting this weekend. basically, i rigged a 120mm fan to blow over the vf900-cu, with three open slots for exhaust air flow on the back. working good so far; the board is stable up to about 95C (yeah, i just said that) and it will start to artifact badly past 100C. since i reconfigured my cooling, i rarely see temps above 80C, but i still need to get a new tube of thermal paste and reapply, i think.

edit: the plus 95C numbers i hit in oblivion on max+graphics mod+max, and occasionally in LOTRO, but not since re-doing the cooling in my case.
