I agree, mass Effect was awesome! I don't know how you could call that short though, thats thirty monster hours of an incredibly complex game.
Not really. You can complete the main storyline in less than 12 hours on the first playthrough. 8 on the second. The problem comes from the fact that you dont need to do any sidequests in order to "level yourself up" for the harder and tougher missions. The enemies seem to get tougher as you build yourself up, and not a more challenging vice versa.
So you only have a 10 hour storyline, with another 10-15 in sidequests. The most timeconsuming of those are also the most boring, as most of the sidequests involve you riding in the moon rover, which is incredibly awfully done.
So yeah, personally, the 8-12 hours of meat is pure brilliance. The supporting aspects (character interaction, universe information and background story/info) is simply colossal and awesome. I cannot describe how great it is. And the coolest part is that the game is so well optimized, that factually, it will run on a system which is significantly below min requirements (just need to run it in windowed mode).
However, the sidequests are a waste of time, and except for the specific quests for your sidekicks (4 or them total, I think), are not fun, and are completely irrelevant and unnecessary waste of time.
That is why I said the game is short.
Amusing thing is that, in order to complete the game, you only have to do 6 missions.
SPOILERS AHEAD! CAUTION!

And all of these missions can be completed in about an hour or so. Just need to spend some time on the Citadel to do mission critical errors.
