Well it was stated above that the 29oo runs hotter for not much better performance. That and it will not be as compatable as the 88oo. Just ask yourself this Q, how many games are made under ATI drivers specially? Not many. You buy a quality game today and they are more than likely perfected on an Nvidia based system. ATI is more of a dollar friendly video card provider now than top of the line.

First of all, do not buy a hd2900xt. It's slower, uses way more power (more than a 8800gtx), produces way more heat, and is generally a steaming pile of crap.

much as i love DAAMIT (amdati) for their x1950 series, don't buy an hd2900xt. the meager benefits in performance aren't justified by the power consumption and associate heat output.

if you don't have vista, don't buy a 8800gts, either. buy an x1950xt for half the price, and wait for an attractive game to be released in "dx10/please buy our steenking pile of hooey M$ OS" compatibility mode ONLY.

unless you've just got money to burn. then get the gtxxx4ocultra of whatever nvidia has under the 88xx moniker. :)

back on topic, between the two, the 8800gts is the obvious choice, though.

edit: gosh i hope DAAMIT makes up ground with their exceptional 65nm 24 and 26 hundred series. they really do (did wrt to high-end products) produce a superb component at equal price points.

they're way better at the mid and lower ends. x1950 pro v 7600gt,

8600 v 2600, etc.

picture quality is better, too, imho, but that's subjective.

maybe get an 8800gts with 640mb vram if you can stretch your budget out that far and that will total own the ati
