Plans for a new computer setup(advice please)

It may be 6 months or more away but want to learn about the latest

thinking of going back to Intel??

things i will be buying as i have a wild box,power,cd drives

1 CPU
2 Motherboard
3 new HD (must be 300+gig)and sata wouldnt mind 10,000 speed??
4 new Ram(533mhz or higher667mhz)( i want a single 2 gig stick)running 4 x 512 atm
5 new Lcd(i want it to be ok for 1600x1200)and 19"20"21" no bigger (5ms or lower)

6 new dx10 card(seen 8800 320mb ones i want)

questions.................

1 good CPU now days?995 p4,650 p4? or amd 5000+?( i have 300-350$ aus dollars for that)

2 Ram speed 533mhz667mhz with what cpu and board?and is one 2 gig stick a good idea?or two 1 gigs?(350$ aus)


3 Lcd@1600x1200( i may have to wait for this i only have 500$ aus dollars)

4 is the 8800 a good buy or something else?(have 500$ aus for that)

But in 6 months the quad core cpu will be cheaper and the must have, the 8800gt320 will be cheaper. So you should wait till about 2 months before you shop for a new rig to get a gauge of what you want and car afford.

1.cpu,definently get a core 2 duo,if you can wait the quad core drops to 260 dollars it hink at the end of this month(someone else can clarify)


2.ram-its dirt cheap right now so pour some of that money into a better cpu,but if i remember right 2 x1 gb sticks is better than 1x2 gb stick,g.skil or corsair are some good brands.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065

6.hard drive-well im no expert on these(or lots of stuff) but theres is gonna be no 300 gig 10,000 rpm hard drive the biggest is a 150 giig raptor so if space is your thing i would get this

^ stephenalfonz offered some good suggestions. save money and get an e6600 and overclock it. q6600 will go from $533 (USD) down to $266 on july 22nd, but if you're on a budget i wouldn't bother with the quads.

you want at least ddr800, preferably some of it that will go up to pc8500 so your cpu and ram are running 1:1 (not as important as it used to be but still...running without a divider is ALWAYS preferable, and ram is dirt cheap because of mfg's flooded the market expecting large numbers of people to actually buy some sort of beta software called "vista".)

680i board is the cat's meow right now. p35's are still bugged.

one general suggestion, get the biggest monitor you are comfortable with. no use getting the third fastest gpu on the planet if you're going to run @1280x1024. edit at 1600x1200, you're in about the right spot for an 8800gts, but it will push higher res'.

recycling your current psu?

PSU's that come with Cases suck, they are cheap and the £50 you spend might save your £750 components from dieing

I've watched a cheap PSU kill an £80 mobo, and i'm never making that mistake again

depends on who made it. if it's a cheap model, then efficiency comes into play. you'll also want active PFC (power factor correction) and a good 15-18ms hold-up time. a good PSU will make sure that all that nasty AC gets sliced, diced and split into much friendlier electrons before it gets fed into your precious silicon.

You don't need to go nuts, but hiper, corsair, fortron and antec all make very good psu's, and 550W one should be sufficient if you aren't running sli or aren't going crazy on water-cooled overclock. seasonic is arguably about the best consumer model you'll find, with a matching price tag.

1) dual core cpu (AMD or Intel)
2) 2 gig (Matched Twin) Ram - Corsair makes some nice gaming RAM
3) nVidia 8800 is awesome (2 of them is even more awesome!!!)
4) Power Supply...at least a 750-800W
5) Go with 2 Raptor 150GB WD HDD and stripe them in RAID0
6) Get a Dell Ultrasharp 20.1" LCD...best rated monitor (And I also own one!)
7) Mobo - make sure it is SLI and can handle upgrades (ASUS is #1)
8) dx10 card....well not proven worth the $$$ yet!!!

These are not in order, but advise none the less.

My rig...

cpu: Dual Core E6700
mobo: Asus P5N32-E SLI 680i
ram: Patriot 2gig PC6400 x 2 (4gigs total)
gpu: BFG 8800GTS 320
hdd: Seagate Barracuda 250G 7200rpm w/16mb cache

The cpu is oveclocked 10% (2.93GHz) with out additional cooling, the motherboard is made to overclock (Bios comes with 'ExtremeTweaker'), the ram is SLI/EPP ready ...this system runs BF2 just awesome. The time from clicking 'join server' to 'join game' is less than 10 seconds. It is ready for future upgrades (I still have two empty ram slots), and can play DX10 games (like Crysis). The only addition that you will need is Vista 64 Home Premium. You will need it to recognize the ram, and DX10. Last comment, I looked at 10,000 rpm HDDs and decided it wasnt cost effective or what net speed gained wasnt enough to pay the extra money ...all your choice of course
