Last Question its about my dads 7800

my dad wants to OC his 7800 gtx but how high can we OC when the mhz now is at 430 some sites say 500 mhz but i dont wanna burn the board any one know how high we can Overclock it without burning the card up

me personally if i ventured into overclocking it, wi oudl oc it by 2 or 3 mhz and test stability after,going very slowly is worth it,or else u can burn it out as you said.

I got 480 on My 7800gt so 500 with a gtx should be possible

Make sure the overclock is done 10mhz or less at a time

every chip is different, you can probably get 50 MHz with ease, but YOU need to test for stability yourself

yea i never OCed anything before lol but i read tons of stuff all night and we got it to 475 from 430 seems to be running well, only raised like 5 degrees in temp, its water cooled so i dont see any problems with it, but thanks for the info,

but i am thinking of getting an ULTRA 8800 and selling my GTX's or is my dual GTX's just as good as 2 ultra's??

what other people oc at doesn't really matter, other than a general point of reference. your internal temps will determine your max stable oc. most important thing for overclocking a gpu is to move the hot air away from the card and preferably out of the case and displace the 80C stuff with 25C stuff (incoming fresh air) as quickly as possible.

you SHOULD see ugly artifacts before you hit a "i just melted my chip" temperature, but some snakes bite without rattling. (if dan rather never said that, he darn well should have.)

monitor temps closely. overclock conservatively, at least until you've got a good handle on a safe range with respect to your specific system.

and don't forget the three rules of overclocking:

you can permanently damage your hardware

you will shorten the lifespan of your silicon (~8 year life expectancy down to 3-4 isn't really a big deal though when you're talking about gpu's though)
