Quiet compared to what? a Scythe + Yate Loon would kick it's *** and be even quieter - feck, a Scythe could run fanless!

Then the question is how much air are they moving? I'll be honest and tell you up front I never looked hard into aftermarket fans but only because when I was building my computer someone highly recommended the zalman series. They stated that its moves the most amount of air at the quiet's level - so yes sir, you may be right about quietness but at what price?

Mind you I never bothered to look at the specs of every fan either nor would I be bothered. Ppl say the artic is the bang for the buck performance so I'm not disagreeing with you.

Anyways, I'll look at what is available for the listed price.

Yate Loons are good for 70 CFM, whereas the fan on a Zalman is about 30 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute of air moved). I'm a "1337 overclocker" and i make knowing how to cool stuff something i'm interested in!

Zalmans are recommended wildly by people who claim to know stuff because Zalman are a big company, their VGA coolers (esp. VF-900) rock, but the CPU stuff is pointless if its got a fan as it needs a lot of airflow to get good results, and even then it'll be beaten by a Thermaltake eXtreme 120 with a Yate Loon - not to mention it will be quieter and probably only a few Dollars more.


Water coolers love Yate Loon fans because their quiet and move a lot of air - great to cool your radiator!

As for the upgrade, I spent probably close to an hour to find the mobo you want and failed.

I know someone did find a mobo you are interested in because it was in this forum not too long ago. I have no memory of the maker but I remember it was cheap and had AGP/PCI-E along with DDR and DDR2 slots. I don't have time (going to work soon) to look for it now but maybe you might consider looking at AGP port only mobo?

Really the only thing that is holding you up is the options you want on your board. Maybe you should just go with a cheap remake then if you don't want to spend a little more on pcie. If that is the case, it would only take a few minutes to find a board and CPU =P

bf2 is not really cpu limited with a modern processor.

maxing out bf2 setting will rely on your gpu and amount of memory. i run max settings on an old pentium d 915 @ 3.5ghz w/x1950xt and 2gb @ pc 8500. i get a little of (what i suspect is) cpu lag in LOTRO on all high/1280x1024, but that's just my speculation until q6600's get below $300. then i'll find out. :)

edit: rts games are far more cpu intensive than most fps. supreme commander, the new c&c would def appreciate C2D's, the faster the better.

2gb ram @ 400mhz is plenty of ram, and it's plenty fast enough to run on all high if you pair it with a good gpu and a c2d.

edit: i see you've already got 1.5gb. upgrading to 2gb may not have that big of an impact.

because it fits your budget, is clocked slightly higher (stock) than an e6320/e6300 and will run 1:1 with your pc3200 ram. the e6300/20 are better chips all around, but would run another $30-$40 dollars, and would be slightly handicapped by either running your ram with a divider (most likely) or by throttling the fsb back to match your ram.

edit: honestly though, i'd wait for someone else's advice or post a question like this in devoted hardware forum like www.techpowerup.com for real-world experience. i'm going off what i've read about both processors; i'm still holding out for when quad core=$266 before i jump on the core2 bandwagon.

edit 2: and for pete's sake, yes anything that says c2d on it is enough processor to run bf2 on all high. your 7600gt is probably good enough, too, but may bog a little at times unless you have a 10x7 or (maybe) 12x10 res.
