Overclocking a 3800+ Dual core

Okay all, I've overclocked my my video card in the past but noticed no real difference and I'm thinking it was due to bottlenecking.

I've been playing Pr now so got another gig of ram which I will install after work today which of course will help.

My next step is to overclock my card again and not I am thinking to overclock my CPU.

That I've never done before and I would like advise. I will just do a small overclock at first till I get a better CPU cooler etc.

My specs are in my sig so any help would be fantastic!

TBH though a 3800x2 is the entry level x2 it wont bottleneck a 7600 card.

I do and uber tech geeks are not always helpful, I want some BF player experiences that's why I posted here.

I don't get all the tech talk sometimes and end up confused and felling stupid.

When I overclocked the card and just one gig DDR ram it seemed to. Then again I am still a noob when it comes to this stuff but hey, if I don't ask I don't learn!

I think a good start would be to look at your temps when your cpu idles and has a full load on it. based on that you should know if you have potential to OC.

You said you were going to get a better cpu cooling installed - I can't say much for that. No idea what your running with right now but may i recommend a Zalman if you can put it on your cpu? Quiet and moves a lot of air. For best performance to your dollar I hear the artic pro is the way to go (maybe a C2d fan though???)

If your BIOS is anything like mine, thats were you OC your cpu. I don't know jack about AMD stuff so I can't tell you what would be a good OC on your cpu but You can prolly at least do 200 mhz? Again, check the temps.

I do have a question for you though - I'm running at 8800 gtx but I cant OC it through the nvidia driver controls. How did you manage to OC your 7600?

I had to download something which went into my BIOS and I got more options in my nVidia display. It was nice, I could quickly change the setting and watch my temps.

I forget where I got it though but it was really easy to use and I barely noticed a temp difference with all the fans in there. On a hot day in my appartment if I remember correctly it went up to a whopping 37C.

The only time it ran hot ever is when I forgot to update my drivers after a format once.

You can download a utility like 3dmark05 and see which increases help. 7600gt has 128-bit memory interface, so it's likely there may be only a minimal difference in what you see in BF2. It's a good card for medium resolutions and moderate eye-candy. If your temps stay down, you might expect a 10-15% overclock.

Here's linky to a shoot-out featuring your card's performance w/overclocking. THM: highest stable was 625/725, and that translated to an increase from ~6100-~6500 in 3dmark05 in a PD 950 system w/1gb. Your mileage will vary.

Try installing Ntune or editing your registry.
Start/Run/Regedit Return

H_Key Local Machine/Software/Nvidia Corporation/Global/NVtweak

Right click in the right hand pane and create New D Word Value, name it Coolbits. Right click on it and Modify, change the value to 1A.

When you enter the Nvida control panel now you will have the option to overclock your card. Be careful not to overdo it.
