Computer wont start

Hey,

My boss's son's computer apparently wont start and he thinks its a PSU issue. I don't know much about his computer other than its prolly very weak because its a cheap HP. Based on the information he did tell me, just wanted to see what you guys think.

He said that when he boots it up it just shuts down. I asked if he could get into BIOS but he said no with an unsure face (I'm assuming he knows how to do it though).

Based on that I think he is right that its a PSU issue but I also could see it maybe being a fried MoBo or just a bad case of dust? I'm going to look at it tomorrow so I thought I'd just get out all the potential issues it may be out.

ask him if there are any beeps at startup.. that could tell you something based on the bios beep codes. also have him open it up and check all connectors and re-seat all cards and memory. also make sure heatsink is clean and cpu fan is running.

Yeah those were all thoughts I had too but he said he'd just bring it into work today anyways so I didn't get much out of him last night. Now that a thunderstorm just came by I'm wondering if I'll even have to work tonite (irrigation on golf course - summer job)

Ok well I got the computer and checked it out. It seems to me that its a burnt PSU.

The deal is that I plug it in, and a yellow light comes on in the back of the computer ( on the PSU) amd I go and power the computer on. It does nothing and the yellow light goes away. After that you need to unplug and plug it back in again to see the yellow light.

I'm look for a weak PSU but one that will last too. The current one was only 250watts and everything I am finding is 350++

I'm going to do my business with canadacomputers.com as they offer the lowest deals in my area. So far, the best thing I have found to replace the current PSU is a thermaltake 350w psu.

My biggest wonder is will it be ok to take it up another 1oo watts? Hmm, come to think of it, I have a new 350w PSU laying around anyways.


EDIT!!! You know what is really crazy though about this half azz HP computer? This thing will play bf2 (horribly thoguh I think) with no graphics card and 1 gb of ram!!! I'm so lost???
