What are mail in rebates. I see them all the time on the egg, but don't understand them. I don't think we get them here in "blighty"

You buy something that has a rebate, you get it home and cut off the barcode on the box it shipped in, fill out the rebate for, attach a copy of the receipt showing you bought the item and then they send you a check in 6-8 weeks.

Well, curiosity got the best of me, so heres a full pricelist (what I paid when I bought the item)

                        Intel Core 2 Quad q6600- $618
                        Asus P5W-DH Deluxe-$250
                        PC&C Silencer 750w psu-$200

Lite On SHW-160P6S (x2, replaced by my sata samsungs)--$60
                        Samsung SH-S183L (x2)-- $80
                        Logitech G7- $62

Sapphire x1950xtx (replaced by my gtx, sold it for $250)-$400
                        eVGA 8800gtx (7% off /w $30 rebate) -$480
                        Ms Vista Ultimate x64-$230
                        Custom Lian Li Pc-7B II -$250 3417

From what I understand, they frown upon bait and switch tactics and deceptive marketing in favor of much more aggressive consumer protection over in ye old blighty.

There are some good companies that offer some good Mail-In-Rebates procedures. Many are what I would consider a scam; the fact that you have to wait 8-12 weeks for your refund gives you three MONTHS to forget about that rebate, or lose the proof that you sent it, and often companies will simply fail to issue the refund until you call and/or prove that you filled in everything correctly and included all the relevant info (UPC symbol, rebate form, invoice and/or receipt, etc.)

Yea, that sounds gay. Why don't they just knock the value of the rebate off the RRP?

economics? because it's easier to sell things if you can fool folks into believing they're getting a deal?

don't get me wrong. there are companies that use reputable rebate clearing houses. i paid (lost?) $10 extra and got a $100 rebate on my current monitor electronically within 10 business days. the other rebate on it took the full 3 months, but I still got it ($25). that made my 19" hanns-g 8ms monitor come to a total of $99, with free overnight shipping thrown in because the retail company (www.pcconnection.com) goofed my order the first time.

most often, the company figures it will only have to pay rebates on ~15-25% of the items it sells with any given rebate promotion.
