ram upgrade hmm???

Hey again,

I was looking at some prices again and noticed the ram 1gb pc8500 sticks are dropping in price like flies... So I figured may as well use my other two ram slots and throw them in?


The sticks I want to get are the exact same pair I already have in my computer. Interestingly they've dropped by over a hundred dollars in a few months which makes my eye brows twitch.... Good or bad??? I think its the 2gb sticks anyways that is the reason for the drop in price and not a quality issue.

Anyways, point of this topic is - A) should i get the two sticks and enjoy a little bit of a speed increase

B) get these sticks instead:

The only difference I saw was that they are Plat and run at 2.1v instead of 2.3v.

c) just not bother with any upgrade I'm being silly?

I think its awesome the 1gb sticks are cheap and having 4 ram slots... 4gb ram is the max for a 32bit os anyways - not like i need to waste money on the 2gb sticks. Even if 64bit os was utilized - what program needs 8gbs of ram??? O_o

Remember, XP and Vista may only see something like 3gb-3.5gb even if you have 4gb installed. Forgot the reason why tho.

OH yeah... I remember reading that too in these forums.

hmmm, maybe I'll look into 2x 512 sticks to finish off my two slots?

Paired sticks are better than singles too I read... Don't know if thats true - maybe someone will clarify that for me.


I also have a question for you sir - your E6600 is at 3.4 ghz - so is your FSB 1510 mhz roughly? My Mobo is safe at 1333 mhz and says it can go beyond but I'm scared too because in the NVIDIA monitor program it shows my FSB voltage in RED - 1.4v I think it was.

My cpu is at 1.4625v and I read (maybe it was yours or someone else) that you can achieve your speed using less voltage? I know it way off topic but I'm curious about it.

Well, im not quite sure what FSB reading your talking about, but in order to get to 3.4 ghz, i kept the multiplier the same at x9, and simply raised the FSB to 378mhz (378 x 9 = 3402mhz). The stock VCore on C2D's is 1.3V, and this was fine until i got to about 3.3ghz, at which point it became unstable and would fail prime95 and Orthos overnight. So i bumped it up to 1.325V and it ran fine. I decided not to go past 3.4ghz because after that, its the VRM capacitors and MOSFET that overheat, and it only had a radiator and heatpipes on top of it, so it wasn't pratical.
I have an "B" stepping of Core 2 Duo, which is known for its good, flat IHS. This means it runs at much lower temps (24c idle - 45c load), and thus, can be Oced further.

A Vcore of 1.4V does seem rather high for 3.3ghz. Have you primed to test it's stability?

EDIT: I have found out what your talking about. My rated FSB is 1511.1mhz and FSB bus speed is 378mhz.

I'm not running at 3.4 ghz though. I'm at 3.01 ghz with a vcore of 1.4v.

Actually I am very confused right now. I just downloaded the same program V1.40 CPU-Z and it is showing a huge difference in what I know I have running. According to it, I'm running at 2.01 Ghz - not even. It thinks my multiplier is x6 too which would explain that. But the funny part is that it means all this software is not giving me the correct readings -> BIOS/NVIDIA control/Microsoft/PC pitstop

yea, i had a problem with the latest CPU-z where it gives my multiplier as 6x, so its not just you. Have you made sure you have turned off Intel Speedstep btw?

Yea I'm 99.9% sure its off.

So then I should use your version for a better reading... In the end though you have about 200 mhz more in FSB than I. If I bump mine up to that I'd have the same reading as you. I'm just scared to go that way because it shows my voltage levels in my FSB bus are in the red - 1.4v.


Do you think its safe to go up to 1511 FSB for me? my board is in my sig too..

Well... your talking about Vcore at 1.4V right?
If that's the case then just turn it down, cos 1.4v is quite a lot. What temps you getting?
Im at 1.325V

that sounds strange, you sure there isn't something messed up. for a Vcore of 1.46, that is a very low temperature.... I would check your temps and stuff in the BIOS as well.

well id have to look over it again but if i remember correctly my bios reads 1.4v with that temp after rebooting the computer and playng bf2 for a few hours.


as far as the ram goes, i went and bought my first choise sticks and was expecting 3 gb of ram to be used. im only getting 2.75 gb of ram. kinda sucks, my old xp home edition could use 3gb of ram. professional is crap hahaha.

Oh well, still debating on returning or not... 64bit systems seem to have a future afterall me thinks

WOAH!!!

After playing with 4 GB of ram installed (4x 1GB sticks) qith only 2.75 GB noticed by Xp my conclusion is: WOAH -----> PIECE OF SHlT.

I dont know what or why it is happening but the story is, while bf2 runs I will keep crashing to desktop. I deleted all the movies so while I'm just on bf2 and not playing, it shouldn't hog much of my cpu or anything. It crashed to my desktop while I was talking on Xfire.

I thought it may have been a random fluke... I was wrong. I went onto TNT wake island server and continued to keep going back after I crashed over and over again to desktop. Sometimes I got the blue screen of death.

After a few reboots and what not, I said I'll try another server. Same shlt, right after loading the map it started to crap out on me. not responding and freezing than just blach and frozen.

Maybe the sticks are over heating? I dont know... I'm happy with 2 GB of ram, I just thought the additional 2 GB was a steal...

Overall, I'm going to return this. Was it opened? Nooo...???
