Exactly which motherboard do you have.?
If it will accept a dual-core processor, then I suggest: Pentium D 915 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116253. I've had mine running at 3.5ghz since I got it (3.75 was a tad unstable after a few hours of gaming). The 65nm prescotts don't have the severe heat problem that 90nm prescotts had.
At ~$90, when you eventually decide to upgrade to Core 2, a Pentium D 915 will sell on ebay for somewhere fairly close to what you paid for it.Comment

Oh. Thought there might've been an off-chance you had an LGA775 chipset.
Problem is that it's going to be very hard to find a fast skt 478 at a reasonable price. Think your best bet is probably ebay. Some folks don't trust ebay, but I've only had a couple of problems over ~150 transactions:

The prescott is a little faster in apps that can utilize the increased (1mb) cache, but they also run hotter than the northwood I linky'd above:

Edit: you could get a 3.4, but it isn't worth the price differential, imho.
