New CPU

yo guys, if i was to buy a new CPU for my system, would i have to reinstall XP (some1 said i did)

at the moment i have a AMD Sempron Processor 1.8Gh and hopefully will be getting a AMD Athlon 64 x2 of some kind...

would i also have to get a new cooling system or could i still use the heatsink and fan that im using atm (i dont no what it is, came with it when the pc was brought)

If i do have to reinstall XP, would i need a CD because i dont have one as the PC was brought as a family computer from pc world or something. (slowly making it better)

Nope, it's plug and play.

But if you buy a new motherboard, you have to do a repair/upgrade install of XP, or fumble around with certain drivers (you have to uninstall all motherboard chipset specific drivers).

You might well need a new CPU HSF because an X2 is bound to run hotter, but im not sure.

yes you would need a Windows XP. If you don't have one, borrow someone elses, then use this tool (http://www.download.com/3001-2094_4-10664536.html) to find your cd-key, and reinstall it using your cd-key but their cd

If i were you, save up your money a bit more and buy a Intel Core 2 Duo and socket 775 motherboard. At the moment, AMD models can compete with Intel.

so all i would have to do... is swap the CPUs over.... and mayb get a new heatsink and fan? not change any of the BIOS and switches on the motherboard... :hmm:

You don't need to reinstall Windows if it's compatible with your current motherboard. It's as simple as unplugging the old one, and sticking the new one in.

Yea, i suppose you can jkust switch it straight over. You will only need to reinstall with a new motherboard.

When going from a single to a dual core cpu, you will need to reinstall windows. It uses a different HAL (hardware abstraction layer) for single and multicore cpu's, and will try to install the one it requires when it reboots after installing the proc. Sometimes it works, but if it doesn't it will be extremely unstable, or it might not even see the second core of your new proc at all.

Reinstall windows.

It never hurts to do a reinstall. Just backup and do one.

Let's see, dual boot XP and Vista. Went from a 3500+ (SC) to a x2 3800+, and both XP and Vista detected the change and installed the appropriate driver (ACPI), and haven't had any issues in either.

hmmmmmmmmm, well i dont have a XP CD but have my key and can borrow CD of m8, but would that involve losing everything on my hard drive?

If i can just replace with the new one and be done with it... then thats what i will do.

but as a last resort if XP dont like it, then i can reinstall it
