So, I got a 40 gig sata drive, and I want to copy my xp onto there. My xp is currently on a 110 gig partition on my other hard drive, and I was trying to use a program called maxtor maxblast to copy it over, but it said it was too big for the new drive. Is there a way to resize the partition so that the program can transfer it over. Or is there another program that I could use?

i dont think it is best to copy your os to another drive as it may cause complications later on.
Your best bet is to format your drive & then install XP on it.

It's quite easy to create a ghost of your current hd and drop it onto another. Typically, you don't encounter any problems.
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge there are no "free" ghosting programs. Maybe others can offer one(s) they've found.
But that is what you want--a program like Norton ghost that will let you do a complete image of one HD and plop it down on another, complete with the MBR.Comment

The one thing you don't mention is how much of the 110 gig partition is used. From the sounds of it you're trying to move an XP install that is taking up close to or over the 40 gigs that are on the other drive. If that is the csae, time to start uninstalling a few things to free up some space.
As for Maxblast I have used it quite a few times with no problems afterwards.Comment

I have norton ghost, and I keep getting errors with it. I'm also not exactly sure what I should do to make it bootable.
Also, Im only using 20 gigs of the 110 gig partition, so it can fit on the 40 gig hard drive.
Also, I've used maxblast before and it works fine, I just need to find a way to just copy 1 partition, not all the partitions on the drive.Comment

I think you will find what is happening is that Maxblast is trying to copy over the whole 110 gigs, which as you know will never go. You can go from smaller to bigger, but not the other way around.
You're going to need to re-size the current XP partition down to 40 gigs or less to get it to work. You know anyone with a copy of Partition Magic you can borrow for this? If not you can give Ranish,

I never liked the idea of resizing my xp partition in case it got messed up. But, since I have norton ghost, I guess I could always just restore the image if something goes wrong. I don't know anyone who has Partition Magic, but I'll give that other program a go.
Edit: I downloaded the other program, and I'm totally lost. Any help?
EDIT- I just realized, resizing the xp partition wont help. Thats because maxblast wants to copy the whole hard drive over, not just 1 partition.
Edit Again- Something went wrong with my drive, so I went to restore it, and I realized that I could restore the image to another hard drive. So, I'm trying that right now, hopefully it will work.Comment
