the 2nd one says its dual core. Not sure if they both are or not tho. I'd go with the Acer. Not sure what peripheral specs each has tho. Built in 802.11g card, usb, firewire, dvi out, esata.... who knows.

The compaq, both in terms of performance and (if they still have anything left from their pre-HP days) reliability. But, I don't know whether or not HP gutted the quality of compaq or not after the takeover.

I'm still running a 5-year old compaq n610c laptop for my work-related stuff, and I've got a seven-year old compaq 233mhz amd platform running as a print server for my lab.

Much love for the old compaqs. Don't have a clue about the new ones, other than the specs look decent enough.

edit: Ha! forgot to mention that the second one is the one from my siggy!

I think compaq has gone down in quality. This is a personal opinion though. And I think you'll find less bundled CRAP software on the Acer. But I could be wrong. I have a Toshiba and those things take a beating.
