Yes Vista uses more memory than XP when just in Windows, but Vista also frees it up faster and more efficiently than XP.

Been there, done that. Only difference is I have Vista so I used the real Vista Sidebar in XP,

An addition to the memory bit above involves the Sidebar and the latest version of Everest. Everest now comes with built in Sidebar support allowing you to see anything that Everest can monitor (cpu usage/temps, memory usage, etc). Have used it in both Vista and XP, and while Vista can be using somewhere between 3-500 mb more when just in Windows than XP, once a game or other memory intensive app is launched the difference is usually less than 100 mb.

Also as far as memory usage goes there is an old saying that "unused memory is wasted memory". So what is the big deal if while just in Windows if Vista uses the memory and frees it up as needed. It has also been shown on numerous sites that Aero has little to no affect on gaming whether it is enabled or disabled.

Can't speak about ATI drivers other than what I have read as I have an Nvidia card, but 2-3 months ago when the article you are referring to (a link would be nice) was written Nvidia's Vista drivers for the most part sucked. For me up until the release of the 158.XX series of drivers almost all games were unplayable in Vista due to stuttering (and for a lot of others), but since the new drivers came out games for me have been nice and smooth. So maybe the articles author needs to revisit his tests using the latest drivers.

As for the comments about 3d Mark same thing applies. Using the latest drivers at least for me the scores are a lot closer to what I was getting in XP (less than 5%, which can happen in XP just between one run and another).

Another advantage of Vista over XP is that Vista supports multi-threading natively without the need of an extra driver. And I can also attest that while BF2 is not a multi-threaded app it does benefit from it on Vista, as I just recently changed from a single core A64 to a dual core a the difference in BF2 is quite noticeable.

And yes I am running Vista 64 and have had zero driver problems.

For anyone that thinks all Vista is is XP with a fancy new interface you might want to give this a read,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista
Let me summarize your very informative post--Vista does some neat tricks, some of which provide a tangible, marginal benefit, for the low, low price of at least one very nice graphics card.

Maybe two after rebates, depending on whether your choice of DRM infections is 32 or 64-bits wide.

If you read the discussion thread linked below you will find there are many Vista users that are having positive experiences. The author's experiences are his own and I think a great look into just some of the complications that can come with upgrading to Vista. Some have had worse experiences and some have had better.
The author also gets slagged for his conclusions quite a bit in the 17 page thread discussing it.

As for the DRM bit I don't have nor intend to get a blue-ray or hd-dvd for my computer, so that sort of becomes a moot point.

        Re: Q - 32-bit vs 64-bit pros/cons?

Well, all this talk of 64 bits vs 32 bits got me to break out a dusty old copy of WinXP 64 pro that I have had sitting unused for about 2 years now. Originally I bought it way back when I first jumped up to a 64 bit processor, an AMD 4000+. Sadly, after I got it home and installed I realized there were no drivers for about half my system's hardware. So I promptly unistalled it and went with xp 32.
So, to get my winXP64 pro system going I planned to run it in a dual boot configuration. I was going to add a partition to my C drive , a WD raptor 150, But as it's only 150 gigs that was just not feasible, space-wise. So I installed a third drive for my system, a nice WD cavier 320 spare that I had lying around. Installed it, flawlessly, other than the fact that Intel didn't include a 64 bit floppy for my AHIC Matrix HD controller. No problem, I downloaded a 64 bit copy and made a new driver disk. I was glad to find drivers for all my hardware, although Belkin's N52's is still in beta, as well as, surprisingly, my HP 5550 Inkjet's drivers.
I then installed a few games, Sandra benchmarking software, and a few other things. I first started out with Half Life 2 , Lost Coast. Upon starting it, I was surprised to see a little tab pop up saying "64 bit mode activated". Looked great, but no better than my 32 bit game. Also I encountered a few odd graphical glitches, but it ran good. So , I ran the included stress test, then went to Sandra and ran the "memory bandwitdth" test, since supposedly the greatest advantage of 64 over 32 bits is better access to large blocks of memory. Well guess what, and I am not surprised in the least, 64 bit had ZERO advantages in either test. I was going to run a few more benchmarks, but quite frankly I am convinced they will tell the same story.

64 bit "Video Stress Test", Half Life 2, Lost Coast : 142.79 FPS
32 bit "Video Stress Test", Half Life 2, Lost Coast : 146.74 FPS

        Sandra RAM Bandwidth test:
        64 bit bandwidth Int Buff'd: 5376 M/S
        64 bit bandwidth Float Buff'd : 5386 M/S
        32 bit bandwidth Int Buff'd: 5373 M/S
        32 bit bandwidth Float Buff'd : 5376 M/S

So where are these great advantages of 64 bit over 32 bit? Nothing but a pie in the sky so far.....

          Re: Q - 32-bit vs 64-bit pros/cons?

I won't be comming off 32-bit XP until it stops me from doing something, or causes something to perform badly. Until then I can do everything vista users and 64 bit users can do, and just as efficiently (sometimes more efficiently :-p). I don't see the point of fixing something thats not broken.

I bought XP x64 and found BF2 to run slightly (and i know know from a benchmark) slower. I only got it cuz I thought it was the way computers were going. I guess I was wrong, sold it on ebay and I'm back to x86. Many reviews and tech shows are saying vistas not necessary. If you have a good running xp machine, keep using it.

Get vista and it stops you from using non certified drivers (WTF no thanks). And x64 drivers... FORGET IT.

            Re: Q - 32-bit vs 64-bit pros/cons?

You made the same mistake I did, I just wasn't smart enough to unload my xp64 onto ebay. I am surprised that it doesn't run better than it does , however. I mean it can't be the same old excuse that the drivers are just not as good, this OS has been out for what, 3 or 4 years now? 64 bit os's just have failed to deliver on any performance promises one after the other.
As for Vista, Microsoft should be paying people to test thier alpha release, I wouldn't even consider it a good beta. As for the other DRM crap, no way. Vista is a pig, and a spendy pig at that.

              Re: Q - 32-bit vs 64-bit pros/cons?

Hmmm, well that just about sums it up now doesn't it?

Mixed opinions somewhat but the the flow says 32bit xp.

ganjker - I was surprised with your test results too. Maybe the reason for the lack of drivers in 64bit is that they are not putting enough techys on it. 32bit being the mainstream, they have enough problems and upgrades and so on to work in there. Why spend money where there is nothing to gain from it? (64bit)

As for vista, I agree with you too. I don't want to be an experimental guinnee pig. xp is good for me.

Well, I got what I wanted out of this - my new OS is going to be XP32bit. Just need to look at what the difference is between home and pro for 70 bucks more.

              Thanks for you feedback guys!

You're call whether the extras in Pro are worth the $70.

Nice nice nicey! I was looking for something pretty looking like that just through google but I got ugly txt. Nonetheless, same info though.

I guess pro is the way to go - to take advantage of the CPU.

                    If you're referring to this,

Scalable processor support – up to two-way multi-processor support.

that has to do with two or more physical cpu's, not dual core. Dual core works just fine in Home.

Oh ok, so thats only for server pcs then? Or does that mean I can install it on two computers?

the only reason i got pro was for the remote desktop. I use that all day at school when I'm in class, and I'm not really into loading up software to use an online web based desktop service *cough* spyware *cough* when xp already does it, and i would certainly say "very well". I also have a grandmother in the UK whos computer can be fixed or looked at without me getting on a 10 hr flight. Theres a few other things pro does for me as well, like access lists for files etc.

As for comparing the 2 gigs vs 4 gigs, I can't say I've seen tests to prove anything yet. One thing I can't see though is 2 gigs of ram outperforming 4 gigs. Though, all the ram does is hold the information your accessing - So for someone who multi tasks I think they would notice a difference vs a gamer who optimizes his/her computer to run one task at a time for pure performance...

                        .
I just wanted to say here: This is a totalbf2 forum, for people optimizing the crap out of computers to run games. Most likely someone asking about what they should buy for the computer is probably asking with the goal of running a game or two the best way. And, 2 gigs does outperform 4 by benches. Also when you say you wanna use ALL of your processor by running a 64 bit processor, you're only running the operating system at 64 bit. A lot of programs you run, or old programs you installed are still running in 32 bits. I dunno, I had x64 xp and personally thought it wasn't even slightly different in boot up times or performance, and I can't find numbers that show it.

The past few months I've been doing some app development on this box and 1 at work with almost the same specs.

                          x2 +4600
                          7600gt
                          2 gigs RAM
                          XP Pro x32

On both machines I routinely run 7-8 apps at 1 time (Dreamweaver, Flash 8, GIMP, Captivate, Blender and some video encoding & decode.

x64 is much smoother and faster at multitasking with a bunch of memory hungry apps. 64 no worse than any other OS just go look in the support forum
most of the threads are people with x32 XP.

Umm ok, So why are you telling me this? I had a Q on which OS to buy for best performance - yes to run my games and other programs too. You are right, this is totalbf2 forums.

Yes, and I was doing just that - Oh wait, you must be referring to when I said something about multitasking better with 4 gigs of ram? I don't even know but I'd imagine it would be faster - I guess I'm wrong though? But didn't I make this thread to find out just what OS to get for better performance?

I got what I wanted out of this - as you could read above - Mixed thoughts. Overall - XP 32 bit. Thanks
