Need a solution(router)

I have read alot of threads about routers and when another pc logs on here I get kicked for high ping.

Would a seperate line eliminate this?
Would faster ISP help?(I have 256 dsl)

My roomate doesnt play games and doesnt really download anything(he dont know how), he just surfs for awhile and shuts it off.(no, he doesnt look at porn)lol.

I can play for a spell and then the ping goes through the roof then back down.

He is wireless and I am connected to a linksys router by cable.

Any suggestions?

Yea, 256dsl is not fast enough to play with two people connected to the Internet. You should either be aiming for 2mb or 8mb (Because i am on it, i suggest Tiscali (2mb Unlimited - £14.99, 8mb Unlimited - £17.99)

faster net will help and surfing shouldn't really make any difference as for the isp stay away from tiscali just read it's reviews and apart from that it's the most complained about isp...lol

You could replace your router with one that offers QoS (Quality of Service). I have a Draytek Vigor 2900, and I can set each of the four ethernet ports to be guaranteed a certain of amount of available bandwidth. But, my router is for cable not ADSL, but I'm sure there will be an equivalent ADSL router.

Yeah, well dsl is VERY expensive here in Alaska. 256 runs me 50 a month including phone. 1m is the fastest available here and add 30 to that and I say no way.

Wi-fi is coming but who knows when that will be, maybe when hell freezes over. The only thing important in AK is oil and fishing!

my flat mates and I share 8mb BB and there 3 of us heavy gamers and xbox live players. And the only time we get high pings is if one of us download.

But i use a netwgear router which can limit the band width, but quicker BB would be worth your while!

Jeez, Alaska, you could go fishing or something if BF2 doesn't work...

Like whathisname above, you could get a router that offers QoS (which enables you to have maximum bandwidth), but i don't know how much they cost.

or....this is a tad risky..... either break off the Wifi aerials or switch wifi off and say the router is broken. Then if he really needs to use the net, get him to buy a router with QoS!

you might try using Qtracker server browser, it wont help your connection, but you would be really able to find the lowest and best responsive servers to play on. its worth a try.

ROFFL! Whats sick is I have thought about it, the antenna screw out! And no you just don't pop up and go fishing. I usually am quite buzzed when I get to playin, they take your car away for DUI.

yeah his ISP alotted speedis fine.

I had issues like yours I found buggin my ISP for new modem and spending a little more on my network card and my router gave me stabiltiy.

Be sure not ot have to old of anyhitng used in your connection really. it DOES matter. ( details do matter) even replace older cables if need be. But your speed is fine as I am sure your processor and MB are of curretn designs (2006 at least)

I can't recommend the Draytek routers enough. Have a look at the chart below, and get yourself one of them routers. There's different ones for ADSL and cable, so make sure you get the correct one.

I've got a 2800, and a seperate 3Com Wireless Access Point (£15 off Ebay). Plug the WAP into one of the ethernet ports on the router and limit that port to 10% of your bandwidth. Wireless users are happy enough to browse at that speed, and you can use the rest of the bandwidth for gaming.

I'd suggest Bt Broadband, You get a wireless Bt Home Hub with it :)

If you have a cable, is it Ethernet or USB?
