    Re: Upgrading to Dual core,HELP!

If all you want to know is whether that dual-core cpu will work, it will. Just drop it in, apply some thermal grease, and slap the hsf back on it. Most likely, you won't even need to reinstall windows. There may be some tweaks in the bios you'll need to set, and you'll probably want to make sure you've got the latest bios, but otherwise your upgrade will be plug-and-play. Your mobo's owners manual should have the relevant minutia.

Having said that, it might be worth your time to think about buying a decent 965 (thinking P5B-E just because I got one) motherboard and a new core 2 for the same price you'd pay for the Opty processor alone. Plus, if you ebay your current setup mobo+cpu it's 1/3 to 1/2 the way paid for.

Either way, you get a nice upgrade; your money and your choices. :)

      Re: Upgrading to Dual core,HELP!

Check which BIOS you have first, it will save you trouble later. Update BIOS if necessary.

I'm using my original O/S install, did not require re-installation, as mentioned above too.

Install new CPU then follow these instructions carefully:

need latest AMD Dual Core driver
      need latest Dual Core optimizer
need latest MS hotfix, version 4(v4)
