Speaking of which, think its worth upgrading an old p4 2.8 ghz (x 2 CPU) to a new 3.4ghz 1mb cache? Its socket 478.

Just fyi, hyperthreading != dual core, since there weren't any dc procs made for s478. If you can get the proc for dirt cheap (less than 50-60 bucks), then it would be ok, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Those are the 6x20 series; double the L2 cache (1mb/core versus 2/core) for the same price (as far as we can tell)...

Yes I know, I just didn't mention the number changes so I wouldn't have tons of different models listed in one paragraph. They are all the same CPU(after 4/22), only different multipliers :)

I would like to put another recommendation on that Corsair PSU. It has more than enough power, as already mentioned...for 2 8800gtx's.

50amps combined 12v rating not enough? Makes me wonder about the actual output of the PSU that guy with the x1900 is using...funny that he listed all his specs except his PSU

thanks again everyone for your suggestings and comments, especially on the PSU part.

I have one more question though, is it hard to put together a PC from scratch and install an OS? I've worked in BIOS before but never did the whole nine yards. I was having some problems one time and I thought my OS got deleted somehow but turned out to be that the HD somehow got turned off through the BIOS though I was not in it for months.

Anyways, point is, I have had some experience in the BIOS and can navigate, will I be able to handle the bigger picture?

Oh yeah! I almost forgot to ask.

Now because I have the option of going SLI in the future, will the current ram I am buying be ok for it? I noticed while looking for ram that there is a whole catagory for "SLI ram" and is also crazy expensive...

I did notice that patriot has the cheapest version of SLI rdy ram at 800 mhz for under 300 (On NCIX.com). Should I go with that instead?

"SLI/Crossfire Certified" is a marketing blurb, not a system requirement. It's like selling a tire with a "pavement certified" sticker on it, if you get my drift.

As for putting the PC together, just read the directions, buy a $3.00 ESD wrist strap and use it religiously, work under plenty of light, and go slow. You shouldn't run into major problems. Once you get the pc to boot, to load windows you just put the CD in the drive and the format had drive wizard/installation prompts will guide you through it. The most difficult part (for me) is getting the right case pin-outs onto the right jumpers, and second guessing myself on thermal paste application.

Your power supply can't be much more better, don't listen to what the other dude was saying; your set!

Remember, don't do EXACTLY on what people say. It's your computer, it's their opinion. Don't let people tell you what to do, get tips etc but remember, it's what YOU want!

^^ Sorry about all that..I had one of my moments. Anywayz, your fine and you seem to be in budget aswell..Keep your os as Xp if your a messy dude who doesn't mind his files everywhere. But soon, many componants will be updated to Vista, along with Battlefield 2. So I'd get VISTA even though it's absolute rubbish! (AT THE MOMENT!!!) Once everythings been updated -ofcourse vista will own!

Ok thanks again, you are a greta help. I am going to change some things around now though because I found out through my moms co-worker's husband that there is another store, close by to me too in fact, that sells some components cheaper. So I had a good talk with him and we looked around at the online selection at http://www.canadacomputers.com/.

I will go with the video card on special at tigerdirect that you found, as the extra 200-300 dollars for just a bit better is not very cost effective on my spending. Thanks for looking at that, that just came on after I did my searching.

Now my next goal would be to get either tigerdirect or canada computers to match ncix.com's prices. Simply because I don't want to purchase online. That and I am still in the process of getting a credit card haha...

I'm not buying it for the tag "SLI rdy" but because it seems like a good deal for ram capable of 1066 mhz. But my question here is if I do get this ram, will my MOBO run it at the speed that it says it (the ram) is capable of? I ask because the MOBO says 5xx, 667, 800, and SLI rdy up to 1200 mhz. I just want to clarify with someone who knows a bit that everything should be ok.
