    Building new system -

Hello. I'm looking at building a new computer and have put together a list of components already. I am just looking for some opinions or statements if I went wrong somewhere.

Motherboard and CPU Combo: EVGA nforce 680i SLI NVidia socket 775 MOBO + Intel E6600 Core Duo.

Cooling Fan: Socket 775, up to 3.8 ghz by Ultra

Video Card: EVGA Geforce 8800 GTA @ 768 MB

Sound Card: Creative Labs X-FI extreme gamer Fatality (used BF2 as an exampled game with great sound)

    Memory: Cosair 2 GB PC6400 800 mhz DDR2 (2x 1GB sticks) 4-4-4-12

Power Supply: 600 Watts by Ultra - Dual 80mm Fans - Sata Rdy - SLI rdy.

Case: Ultra Grid ATX mid-tower clear side with 2 x 120mm fans

Component Costs in order from top to bottom:

    644.99
    66.99
    669.97
    186.99
    249.97
    93.99
    79.99
    +
    -----------
    = $1992.89
    x 1.14
    -----------
    = $2271.90

Note: I would be pulling my Seagate 320 GB 7,200 RPM 16 MB cache HD out of my current computer along with the DVD/CD-Rom + CD burner + 3 1/2" floppy drive.

Well, that is my initial build and everything seems to fit in. However, I'm not sure about the power supply. Then again, I am asking for people to proof read my design too so I don't make any mistakes... So yeah, any input is great.

Also, if the power supply isn't enough there is a case + power supply combo with the same case i showed and a 700 Watt ultra unit. The catch is that it doesn't provide any information on the power supply. that combo comes out to $ 200 so it isn't much a difference in price.

Anyways, looking forward to hearing comments. Thanks.

I would strongly suggest to NOT buy the parts from tigerdirect. The best place to buy from is ncix.com

Originally I did look into NCIX.com. I actually forgot to compare the final design I worked out with both sites. However, I can drive over to a tigerdirect store here and NCIX I think is shipped to my doorstep. either way, I was just looking at comparing the prices when I saw that someone replied finally to my post.

However, that does not answer my question... Thanks for the tips though.

I may just use a combination of the two actually. I'm not sure, NCIX doesn't look as pretty to my tired eyes right now because I'm tired... lol

But uhh, so far it looks like there isn't much of a difference in price between the two, they work out to be about the same.

Have you looked at their weekly sales? You can go to it by clicking the pic on the front page.

          Re: Building new system -

Well... There isn't much difference between the two as I stated. I looked and looked and even upgraded... I decided what the heck, out do myself a little more and go for the EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX KO ACS³ Edition / 768MB DDR3 / SLI / PCI Express / Dual DVI / HDTV / Video Card.

Though that card costs 865 on TD compared to 794 on NCIX.com, after all is said and done, the total is a difference of 40 bucks. The gap would be bigger but almost 100 goes towards shipping and insurance from NCIX.com. Too bad thats not free, $ 140 in savings that could have been...

Anyways, I will share the different components from NCIX that I have picked out as they do not seem to carry Ultra and they have different specials on.

PSU: Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620W ATX Triple 12V 50A Continuous 24PIN ATX Modular Power Supply 120MM Fan

          Memory: OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit

The Ultra PSU's are not that good.

Errr... It seems that I have made a mistake while doing my online shopping at NCIX.com. I left the same items in it that I viewed from months earlier and still want now and only after deleting them and re-selecting them again did I gain more savings.

The difference is about 150 dollars now. That is with the case included from tigerdirect too. I did not feel like looking for another case like the ultra, it seems like a very nice case and at quick glance NCIX.com does not seem to have a similair one at the same price (again very QUICK glance).

Is that so? I heard differently... Cosair I know is a good name though.

Oh yeah, sorry about posting in the wrong thread. I guess I over looked the tech thread. Again, sorry.

The Corsair psu is great and very stable. For this being their entrance into the psu market, they did an amazing job.

                  Ok, thanks on the tips.

So I take it this will be an excellent PSU to run this system? The whole power thing is where I venture on into even more scary territory... hahaha.

Woah I am totally upgrading the MOBO to a EVGA Nforce 680I SLI LGA775 Conroe ATX DDR2 2PCI-E16 2PCI SATA2 RAID Sound GBLAN Motherboard.

This one has more capabilities as well as upgrade potential than the current one I have selected for a meer 20-30 bucks. So glad I'm over looking this stuff again... I think this where I have to stop and step back to reality before I get too carried away though lol.

                    Well, I suggest u to buy a power supply with more energy. I got an MSI Neo3 Mainboard, C2D E6300, Sapphire X1900gt, 1024mb DDR2-667 OCZ System Elite RAM, Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU-Fan, 200gb Seagate/7200rpm/16mb cache, sony dvd-drive

... and I need about 550W form my 600W power supply. In your presented system u got much better hardware than I, so I think u need about 700W. And don't whine if u have got about 50W-80W remaining, it's as well good for overclocking (... if your system is too low in a few years ).

To the op: Do not listen to anyone who says that corsair unit isn't enough, they're about as wrong as you can get. That psu can power dual 8800gtx's just fine, so you don't need anything more powerful.

                        Yes Sir! lol

Thanks for your input, that was the one answer I was seeking the most out of this topic.

April 22nd is Intel CPU price slashing day...wait until after April 22nd to make your purchases.

the e6300 and e6400 also get their L2 caches increased from 2x1 to 2x2...to match that of the higher models.

After 4/22, the only difference between the e63/e64/e66/e6700's will be their clock speed. Prices are going to be cut significantly, almost to the point of a free video card if you wait just a few more weeks :)

Those are the 6x20 series; double the L2 cache (1mb/core versus 2/core) for the same price (as far as we can tell) is really a good deal if you can wait another 18 days and a wake-up. :) Doubling the cache may give you 10% improvement in some operations, probably closer to 3-5% in most current games.

Q3 07 will also see the 6x50 series will debut later and offer a 1333mhz FSB, with a serious price reduction as they will almost simultaneously be debuting with the brand new 45nm Penryn cores (and cores, and cores, and cores).

...though waiting on tech, as a rule, provides diminshing returns.

Question to OP: Are you planning on buying 2x nVidia video cards in SLI? The 680i--while it is the best board on the planet--seems a bit overkill if you aren't.

Ok, I will sit tight and wait for a price reduction and then look around again. i will have the design ready and just look around again in a month to make sure everything is in order

This build I am making is purposely built to have upgrades in the future and still survive. As of now it will only be one Vid card but should the need in a few years arise that I require another one, I would be happier to know that I went the extra mile for the vid card today. If I want to start slashing at the price then I could probably reduce it down to a grand with just the CPU and MOBO staying from the original design. However, running on a dieing dual cpu P4 2.8 ghz system, and yes, DIEING - I would like to experience that happy feeling again of being.... Free. =D

Speaking of which, think its worth upgrading an old p4 2.8 ghz (x 2 CPU) to a new 3.4ghz 1mb cache? Its socket 478.
