    Sound Blaster X-Fi extreme gamer sound card issues with BF2

    My system: Asus A8V motherboard, Amd X2 3800+, 2gigs Corsair 400mhz TWINX 3-3-3-8, ati x1600pro, 550watt generic PSU, 250gig SATA.

    Ever since the X-Fi was installed, my computer freezes randomly while I play BF2 and needs to be manually rebooted. This can be extremely frustrating after a great streak of getting 5 gold stars in a row and being 30 points above everybody on the server. This happens to me every single time I play BF2.

    I have tried everything. Reformat, didn't solve anything. Upgraded bios, nothing there. Ran memtest86 to make sure it wasn't my ram, and it wasn't. I cleaned the contacts on my sound and video card with a tiny bit rubbing alcohol using Q tips, didn't solve anything. I mounted an 80mm fan above my video card using wire to make sure my card wasn't overheating. I even bought a new bigger wattage power supply then I previously had. STILL NO SOLUTION.

    I've posted this on the Sound Blaster forums and I am waiting for a reply. I was wondering if you guys could help me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

      I wound up having to uninstalling everything and only installing the drivers. There is a way to change modes in the control panel but you wont have all of the bells and whistles that you would normaly have.

          Stick it into game mode, simple as that.

              The first thing you should do is remove the X-Fi and uninstall all of its drivers. Then try the game to see is if that was the problem.

              Step 2.- If not, run a virus scan, like AVG which is free and a Malware program (a-squared is a free one).

              Step 3.- Download this great free progeam called ccleaner (crap cleaner). It finds problems on your computer and fixes them, it also cleans up files that aren't being used (Like internet files). It's amazing and free! www.ccleaner.com

              Step 4- Those steps are simple and will take you like 20 mins or so. Try it again and if it still doesn't work check your harddrive for errors and defragment.

              You said you reformated it? Meaning you deleted everything and reformated the Harddrive like a clean install??? Cause if you did that, then its like you are running a brand new computer. If that is the case, then it has to be a hardware problem. Just call up the soundcard company and ask for a new one, or replace it at the store you bought it from. Try those steps I gave you, they deff can't hurt. Good luck man.

                  Believe me dude, it is in Game Mode (sigh).

                  I defragment every other day.

                  My computer is bug free.

                  Freshly installed version of windows.

                  Maxpower, I am convinced removing the sound card will fix the problem, but that doesn't solve anything...I'm confused with what I should do now.

                      How doesn't that solve anything?? Dude that solves everything!! That means your card is broken and you need a new one. Call up creative and tell them the problem, or wherever you bought it from, and tell them to send you a new sound card.

                          If I remove my sound card, how will I have sound? Hence, ''it will not solve anything''.

                          I just found out that the most motherboards have trouble with the X-Fi... PCI slots can't deliver the required speed to the X-Fi or some **** like that. I'm quite pissed off with X-Fi.

                              wow man....your motherboard has a built in sound card dude. You didnt know that? You dont need a sound card unless you want amazing sound. Do yourself a favor....take out your card and plug your speakers into the audio ports that are built into your motherboard. What did you think they were there for? The ASUS A8V as 8 ports man!! Then throw your sound card away.

                                  i did find something once on the sound turning scratchy and then suddenly cutting out with the X-FI and BF2 + other high end games it was caused by a certian chip in motherboards creative has spent alot of time trying to recreate that prob so they can come out with a fix but still keep blaming it on this chip ... i know its not the problem you have stated but there might be a connection there, do you have the latest drivers for the X-Fi?? try downloading an old driver if you do and reinstall with that one see if it changes anything

                                      yea i just got a xfi extreme gamer fatalty pro today every game (dawn of war, medieval 2 total war, and tmnt demo) and music sounds great. i go to play bf2 tho and i ctd have only tried this on single player but im sure multi will be the same.

                                          You could try and Google "PCI Latency Tool." It resolved Oblivion crashes and scratchy sounds in BF2. I forget what I tweaked mine to, but you should be able to look on their site and get suggestions.
                                          You could also see if you have any audio codecs that are conflicting. I haven't seen this problem in BF2, but I have seen it in other games.

                                          EDIT: You could also have an IRQ conflict. Try putting your card in a different PCI slot. My Graphics card and Sound card shared an IRQ and caused issues when my X-Fi was in my top PCI slot. I moved it to the second from bottom and it resolved a few other issues. The other option is to manually assign IRQs in your BIOS. It was easier for me to just move the card.

                                                  I just looked at mine and it's set at 96. It's working great. I think the default was 32? Some tweak guide suggested 96, I think. I know I didn't pull it out of a hat.

                                                          Okay let me explain.

                                                          Maxpower, the reason I bought a sound card in the first place was so I can have awesome sound and so the sound card does the sound processing for my CPU. Couldn't you have figured that out by yourself?

                                                          It's not an IRQ issue. My sound card has an IRQ to itself.

                                                          Not latency issue, I have PCI latency tool set to 248 for my sound card :) while the rest is at default 64.

                                                          I'm just going to return this ****ty X-Fi for a sweet Inferno card that everybody is going to.
