Upgrade time

Had a second 7900 till it decided not to work anymore yesterday. So it's upgrade time as I can't be bothered with SLI again with my current mobo (not good for space round the two cards including my X-Fi so it ran hot) for now...

Following will be ordered in the next few months (well, little by little at a time actually):

Coming first (ie quite soon)

Tagan TG800-U25 800W ATX2.0 Dual Engine Silent SLi Compliant Silent PSU

Well, first of all the striker extreme is ok, but very overpriced. The evga 680i board is almost the same, but much cheaper. The gpu is great, but that monitor ain't gonna cut it. For the gxt, a 20" widescreen is minimum, otherwise the gts is more than enough. If you're going to go sli, a 24" is really minimum, othewise you're wasting your money.

For the ram, that corsair is overrated, go with a nice 2gb kit of g.skill hz (ddr2 800).

Cheers. I was thinking of the Striker as I'm going to be clocking this one, monitor wise I should be having a Dell 24" widescreen soon, as for the RAM, once more I'm looking into the clockability.

Oh, will the PSU be enough or should I go for one with more output?

yea, i noticed the gpu's you listed are the same. outputs aside, they are the same. and two 8800 GTX's in SLI mode wont show you a whole lot of difference from running just one; Nvidia hasnt put drivers out there to utilize the full potential of SLI with the new 8 series cards. Instead of dumping all the money into a intel processor, why dont you keep the AMD you have now and just spend that huge wad of money instead on a watercooled setup. for about the price of a new intel processor i could watercool an AMD setup with one 8800 GTX to benchmark higher than the intel setup you want. good choice on the memory, but with the dominator series, youre spending all that money to have a cute little heatsink put on top like a fashonable hat. Just get the overclocked corsair memory thats reccommended for that board and SLI certified for the future, but dont spend that unneccessary for memory that looks prettier. Oh, if you want to upgrade your processor, stick with AMD but get away from that Opteron. get an X2 or an FX series processor. Just my opinion, but I feel Intel is overmarketed and overrated.

Sorry mate, but I think your misinformed. The Opteron is an X2, with a different name. Designed for servers and they are meant to have better quality Silicone. They are the overclockers choice.

As for two 8800's, I said maybe in the future. For now I'll just be having the one. I'm borrowing a mates 8800 GTX this weekend, I'll do some benchmarks on it and try it out.

Regarding the Conroe being over rated, I think you're in the dark ages mate and hence I'll take your advice with a pinch of salt....

Finally, the EVGA 680i board, been reading up a lot and most sites and friends in the know say that it is no where near as stable as the Striker, especially when it comes to overclocking.

Dude for a motherboard i would go with the EVGA 680i. People say that they have trouble with those boards but i have had mine for about a month and haven't had a single problem. And you can do anything you want with that. There Overclocking machines

LMFAO dumb ***, the Opteron cost me less then the equivalent AMD X2, has better Silicone, overclocks better and has apparently more cache according to you (even though it doesn't). When someone has a suggestion that is based on fact on not hear say maybe I won't shoot them down like I have you. I'm potentially spending a lot of money on a system that I'm hoping that will last me a number of years, therefore I would like some solid suggestions, not half arsed attempts to temp me otherwise. BTW the E6600 out performs the new FX-70 and above CPU's from AMD when it comes to gaming. Thought Conroe's weren't worth it???

You may want to get a PSU with 8pin PCIexpress since it will soon become the standard. This is a great choice:

The one you listed only has 2x 6 pin.

I honestly don't see why you don't wait for quad core to become reasonably priced and just get an 8800 GTX for now.
