I'm having some laptop troubles whilst playing 1080p videos... So I'm just going to post my troubles here because no one ever checks the support section...

So like I said, I want to watch 1080p films on my laptop, but every-so-often the frame rate drops to **** and the video starts stuttering like crazy. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
8GB RAM DDR3
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 - Crossfire X - 512mb each.
Vista Ultimate 64bit

And I remember when purchasing the screen resolution was 1920x1200, allowing 1200p or something like that, although I could be wrong (about the 1200p)

I really don't know. If you haven't change anything to do with drivers I'm thinking it's gotta be a problem with codecs or hardware. Only moves? Certain kind?

What are you using to view the movies?

My hunch tells me your problem is Vista. Save up some money man and upgrade to 7. Turn off Aero and make sure your wallpaper doesn't change. Does this also happen when you first start watching the movie or does it take time?

Try dropping the frequency of the display down when you are watching to like 24Hz. I remember my sisters laptop had a problem with this but only when watching on the tv. I dropped the frequency down to 24Hz and watching movies got way better. Another option would be to mess with VLCs output options.

Actually it's not only movies. Every now and then my computer lags (normally a few minutes after I start it up), I then put it in Power Saver Mode (battery option) then it calms down for a few minutes, then once it starts lagging again I put it back to High Performance...

But for the movies I'm using VLC. WTF is Aero? And I don't have a changing background. And how do I change the frequency?

Yes I am a noob at some things computer-wise

Back-up files you need. Format your hard drive. Then either upgrade to Windows 7 if you know what's good for you or just reinstall Vista.
